If you can’t stop smoking weed long enough to pass a test you know is coming in a certain date range, that makes you the opposite of a responsible adult.

Weed shows up in a urine test for two months. They don’t give you two months notice.

So if you’re unemployed and looking for work, stop smoking.

From a social constructivist perspective, I am encouraged that we all accept the sentence “Pot is increasingly legal” as fact.

It isn’t; everyone is still violating the Controlled Substances Act. But the fact that they are and people view it as legal means full repeal may be soon a commin’. Desuetude y’all!

Lot’s of laws on the books where behavior is technically unlawful, but not enforced or loosely enforced.

It’s being legalized at the state level all over the country. That would fit the description "increasingly legal."

I am a frigging prosecutor and I don't get drug tested. I live in Canada, and I've never heard one person talk about getting drug tested for a job. Unless you're operating heavy machinery, seems totally unnecessary.

Hmm, do all these Media companies not test? I can’t wait till someone gets hurt because some High employee causes an accident, and they sue their employer for not giving them an Osha safe working environment.

    It’s coming.

And if you’re a moron that believes being high while working a train or a crane doesn’t cause accidents, you’re a moron.

      1. Working in a profession where safety, etc. is critical is different than drumming out a newspaper article.

      2. Nearly every employer has a policy against being intoxicated on ANYTHING while working. That’s very different than having weed in your system from getting last weekend.

Yeah, can you imagine the danger of a journalist operating Microsoft Word while high? Think of the deadly typos!

Also, your last sentence literally says "If you're a moron.....you're a moron." You're either describing yourself, or you're already high.

Why would you drug test when it has no bearing on the job? Whether or not pot is illegal shouldn't matter, all that matters is whether a drug will negatively affect your job performance or not.

      Two possible scenarios

      1. Insurance. Many insurers will offer a discount if you have a drug testing program. Of course, their actuary data is often modeled on factories, etc. and not a typical office environment.

      2. Dangerous areas. If you work in a factory environment or other environment where safety is critical, some employers want to do everything possible to minimize the chances of accidents (except when it costs them real money, but I digress). That means testing for drugs.

What about travelling to and from your place of employment? I can imagine companies not being too keen on hiring someone who is high while driving to or from work.

While I’ve never been for prohibition, I’m not entirely sure I’m down for the whole “smoke if you got ‘em” wave of liberalization. We do need certain limits.

I personally cleaned up my act in my early 30's —way later than I should— and became much more productive and happy to work. But for too long a while after I quit smoking weed I was supporting my partner who was the exemplar of a burnout —demotivated, unemployed, and just plain lazy— and after too many times begging my partner to get out of the daze, I left. No regrets.

The converation needs to change from this idiotic need to make drug users these social pariahs to just recognizing that drug use is a health issue. Like all health issues, it’s doesn’t become a business matter until it starts impeding your ability to work —at which point a good manager really should be able to either change the environment (paid time off, etc.) but also some limits (e.g., fuck up on a deadline while on a bender and it’s mandatory to get treatment).

Well......yes. I mean, I get the writers make no bones about their generic love of the green, BUT, I am wondering if they have to pass a test specifically for pot to even get in the door.

Let’s be honest, it’s still a business with lawyers, and safety and all the other bs used to justify testing for pot, so I would assume they test new employees. I’m just asking if that is the case.

I've worked in advertising and marketing for decades, and have had to submit to drug testing for most of these jobs I've had. Sure, I can see testing truck drivers, medical personnel, heavy equipment operators, etc. - but I've never heard of terrible tragedies or lives lost due to drug-induced bad marketing plans or unfortunate design decisions (hell, those can be made stone-cold sober). But if you're really serious about testing, some sort of screening for excessive alcohol use might not be a bad idea either. When I did see bad things happen on the industrial end of the companies I worked for, alcohol was most often the cause (late-night benders or hidden alcoholics who actually drank on the sly during the day).

We need more employers to stand up for civil rights. This is bigger than just weed. Its about an archaic drug policy directed to undermine the poor. It’s about common sense and fact based evidence. Its about insurance companies who look for any reason to deny you the benefits you paid for. How long are we going to allow the government and big business to infringe on our rights?

That’s stupid. It’s not your “right”. What rights are you talking about? A company can screen employees for drugs and booze for safety ressons. Grow up. You sound like a teenager. The government! Rights! The poor! nice fucking try.

I expect that, as more of the civilized states legalize marijuana, the Republican-controlled hick states are probably going to crack down on marijuana to a far harsher degree, if for no other reason than to abuse and disenfranchise the minorities they hate so obsessively.

They don’t even need a reason. If civilized people are in favor of anything, Republicans are furiously against that thing, whatever it may be; it’s reflexive.
