This would be awesome for the neighborhood(s). But I read that they’re also revisiting Bloomberg’s idea for a toll zone in midtown. Bring a car into midtown and you’d pay a pretty stiff toll, either over the 59th Street Bridge or coming down the avenues. Anything south of 60th and north of, I think, 42nd. Or maybe I just dreamed that.

Now, if they could only charge any residence owner who doesn’t reside in the residence for a full 6 months out of each year a $10 million (or maybe $100 million — or $10 billion!) fine for wasting space in Manhattan, I’d be happy. Well, let’s be honest. I wouldn’t be happy, but I’d be less miserable a few minutes more each day when I thought about the fine and all the ways that money was being put to the greater good.

I’d be happy that rich people waste of space fine! It would bring me great joy to feel their pain...

This? The general plan is for closer to equitable tolls on all crossings and anyone heading south of 60th, with lower tolls on the outer crossings.

I don’t see what this would solve. To me, this seems like it would create another pedestrian plaza, like Times Square, which really did nothing but screw up traffic. 14th Street is an extremely important cross-town route, and blocking off that street to vehicles (like taxis) would only make cross town traffic worse than it already is.

You are right. This will only make it worse, drivers will just use 13th and 12th streets then 11th and 10th when the former get too backed up and create immense gridlock on 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th aves

Why doesn’t NYC build some more aerial tramways criss-crossing the city? Why should they let cars be the sole cause of pedestrian deaths?

NYC used to have tons of elevated lines, even one running up 6th ave and stopping right there at 14th. It lasted until ‘38, when it got shut down like most of the old elevated lines.

Interesting idea but it wont do jack shit for the commuters who will get fucked by an L train shut down. Their problem is crossing the East River.

what? What is an L system? This is about one specific line that connects the 2 Largest business districts in the USA to the epicenter of hipsters. This is more relevant to Gawker readers than pretty much anything.

Thank you Manhattan for saying F you to Queens again. Not that it really matters to me, but there a few reasons I can think of that you may need a car and not a bus, your legs or a bike. To get around... Or to a place on or near 14th. Whatever, we have the airports, after being f’ed by Manhattan for many years, maybe queens people should f Manhattan back for a change.

You can drive your car from Queens to, like, 15th Street, and park. Do you really enjoy sitting in traffic on 14th Street that much? That’s all you’re giving up here.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a crossing guard. To me, being a crossing guard was better than being President of the United States. Even before I first wandered into the school district administration building for a part-time crossing guard job, I knew I wanted to be a part of them. It was there that I knew that I belonged. To me, it meant being somebody in a neighborhood that was full of nobodies. They weren’t like anybody else. I mean, they did whatever they wanted. If they made folks wait until the light was red, nobody ever gave them a mean look. In the summer when school was out and they stood out on the street waiting for somebody to help across, nobody ever called the cops.
