I never understood why anyone went to that place. It’s like the Soviet version of Home Depot or Lowes.

It’s because people are indoctrinated at an early age with their multitude of commercials that end with this catchy jingle:

And yet, despite hearing that commercial constantly, even over and over again when you’re inside the fucking store, my mother still calls them Maynards. Like the month.

If there is a tiny silver lining, know that it is impossible to enjoy just about anything—including one’s immense wealth—when you are a complete asshole. So, there’s that.

I live near many Menard’s I would never shop at one. Sometimes I click on their ads, hoping to incur a minor fee for Menard’s, knowing I’ll never, ever shop at one. I happily tell people I know not to shop there.

Home Depot’s founder is definitely right-wing, and no peach either, but I’d directly hand that billionaire a dollar myself before spending a dollar at Menard’s.

For building materials, I go to Lowes. For tools I go to Harbor Freight. It may be all shit produced in China, but considering that most of the shit at the big box stores is too, I might as well save a few bucks for myself.

I learned this by playing Grand Theft Auto 5.

They just throw any and all attempt at pretense out the window with that final pie chart don’t they? Like, some of the other stuff could be construed as some-what intellectually honest (if you squint hard) but i guess by the time it came to make that pie chart they were just like ‘Fuck it, lets just go full Orwellian on this!’.

You would hope that, in context, that pie chart was a joke, but nope. Right there among “serious” concepts like the laffer curve (which is also a joke, but for entirely different reasons)

I work for a large, multinational corporate, whose CEO is one of the richest in the world - like top 10. And he just happens to be another right wing, Republican shill; so it’s not uncommon that we’ll see “memos” from out illustrious leader pop up in our company intranet espousing free market trade, the benefits of the Keystone Pipeline (when that was a hot topic) or asking us to write to our Congresspersons about this or that. Total propaganda on the company dime.

I alway think “Nah, bitch. Your swanky office overlooks Capital Hill. Send your lackies over there to plead your case. I have real work to do.” Prick.

Every large company I’ve ever worked for does this. Lowe’s when I was in college, to HCR ManorCare as a professional. I didn’t know this was newsworthy.

Unfortunately, in a lot of places, all the small hardware stores have been driven out of business and Menards might be all that remains. That’s the new reality for a lot of people. If they want to shop for groceries, they have to shop at Walmart. If they need to replace a broken window or just repaint their garage door, they have to shop at Menards.

There are lots of online retailers with great selections. Between Amazon, Harbor Freight, and a few specialty online retailers, you really don’t ever *need* to step foot in a Home Depot, Lowes or Menards.

I’m about to abandon the big boxes, regardless, now that they’ve started killing their selection of actual tools and things I need to fit more overpriced junk on the endcaps. Same reason I abandoned Radio Shack years ago, when they moved entirely into commercial electronics and away from electrical components, boards, etc. I already had places to get that stuff— you were supposed to be my source for stuff I couldn’t get elsewhere!

Went to Home Depot to get 4 Nuts this past weekend — apparently they can’t even bother to carry metric threads/nuts in anything other than X1.75, nevermind that X1.25 is a common thread for tons of products produced in Europe and Japan... they’ll probably follow that same death spiral that Radio Shack went through as they chase the high-margin sales that are better handled through an online platform, while ignoring the bread-n-butter tool and component sales that drag people into the store where you can capture some of that impulse shopping...

I had a VP of Sales that made us read Atlas Shrugged as part of our initial training at a healthcare software company. I did read it just to see what the other side sees...Ayn Rand is a bad writer, the story isn’t even good when evaluating purely as a work of fiction. We had a conference call to discuss it after training. Awesome.

Ayn Rand novels perfectly sum up most corporations nicely though - they’re way too big and bloated and they’re not as half as good as many people claim they are.

GE employees read this, shrug, and continue their lives. We’re used to it, and complaining about it isn’t going to change a damn thing... I’m just filling a seat until I’m replaced by someone with an H1-B or my position eliminated entirely, while in the meantime, the company reminds us that exorbitant government handouts and projects are the only way this fragile little company can survive another year.

Burger King does the same thing. I worked there for almost three years and for the last couple of months they handed out these pamphlets from this “Job Creators Network” company, with the theme “I Had No Idea?”. The pamphlets were obviously conservatively biased, and most if not all of the points they made were rather moot and obvious. I may have the picture of one of the pamphlets somewhere.

Point is: it was ridiculous how they pushed their belief on the employees. Even had them in spanish too.

What limits profits? Wages. By enslaving you and not paying wages, we’ve eliminated the greatest cost driver for our business. This makes profits larger, and larger profits mean more jobs and more tax revenue collected by the government.

I do love it when right wingers scream and cry and point about the national debt, yet they eagerly await and call for our next overseas military adventure. I live in Menards country but only shop there while holding my nose (as in Walmart, which is right down the road from it). They do have a shitload of stuff all in one place, but their employees are pretty useless. Despite the higher prices, my small neighborhood Ace or True Value has become my hardware store of choice. Their help can run on the crotchety side, but they do know their hardware lore.

I guess that’s what happens when they are taught right wing ideology instead of basics of construction, plumbing or gardening.
