I have recently discovered I have two friends that are very strongly anti-vaxxers. I genuinely don’t know what to do. Right now my two year old is up to date with his vaccines but he’s still too young for some and I don’t want him hanging out with their kids. And it feels awful because I deeply care for both ladies as well as their kids. I basically feel like an asshole but I don’t dare budge on it :-(

Don’t have kids, but I wouldn’t want to expose my child to an environment where they could be exposed to diseases not yet vaccinated for. You’re doing the right thing.

A family friend has not ever vaccinated her children, and they're always sick. She claims that colds don't count.

      I’m with missypoo50.

It sucks, but having your kids around someone’s kids who could be spreading MMR is no bueno. I’m adamant about my kid only being around vaccinated folks. I don’t want to even put up with that kind of bullshit.

Several anti-vax organizations have been pooling their collective intellectual powers

Never has a less threatening phrase been uttered.

Adult anti-vaxxers. Still dumber than the average bright 12 y/o.

Mostly Unrelated: The other day I had a close encounter with a rusty nail (thankfully it didn't penetrate my flipflop!) and I started thinking about tetanus shots, and then I started wondering if anti vaxx people are against tetanus and rabies shots. I fell down a google rabbithole (have a phone I can take in the shower leads to lots of interesting googling!) and it turns out that yes, anti vaxx people think you can cure tetanus and rabies with lavender essential oil. Good god!

Tetanus is generally given as the DTAP/TDAP vaccine, so yeah, they’re against it.

The delicious thrill I get when I see a (sic) from within a quote of someone I degree with trying to deliver a burn is so sweet, like the sweetest dessert. Just...the best.

I didn’t quite grasp the levels of disturbing but hilarious but mostly disturbing levels of anti-vax insanity until I was on the receiving end of it after writing a couple of articles on vaccines for work that subsequently were shared a bunch of times on FB. Holy shit, dudes. You’ll be called every nasty name in the book and, somehow, through all the smug, the peek into their psyches is legitimately mind-boggling. Like... I don’t know how one can be smug about saying that the Obama administration has the DNA of everyone who has ever been vaccinated but... it happens.

YES! Mulder and Scully found a bunch of alien corpses in buried freight car in New Mexico with smallpox vaccine scars on their arms. Christ, how the fuck do I remember that?

Then she said that by reading my response and then reading your own journal from when you were my age, you could easily tell that I was not a child, but an adult because of the way I phrase sentences.

He does write quite well for a 12-year-old. But I have a 12-year-old myself who writes as well as this because he’s been an inveterate bookworm his entire life and has always enjoyed writing. He’s into astrophysics, not medicine, but he’s written stuff like this on the subjects he enjoys.

The fact that a 12-year-old can write intelligibly and effectively does not prove they’re an adult.

In fact, what it proves is that our education system well and truly sucks. There is nothing stopping *most* twelve-year-olds from writing well (maybe not as articulately as he does).

I have a 7 year old who is writing a novel right now. Sometimes she screws up her punctuation. But I’m pretty damn sure she’ll be writing like this with no trouble in five years.

Many vaccination opponents aren’t particularly happy with Walgreens to begin with; the company offers immunizations at many of its stores

    How dare they?!?!

Also, antivaxxers, PLEASE DO boycott Walgreens. Please. I don’t want you in the same store I do 90% of my shopping in.

That's what I tell anti-vaxxers when I encounter them. I ask them not to take their children out in public because they're a danger to the wider community. It never ever goes over well.
