K’naan is fucking awesome, although the description sounds kind of one dimensional.

I don’t think many people understand, or wish to understand, nuances within the Somali experience/diaspora. It’s far easier to lump us together with other Islamicized African regions such as Nigeria (Nigeria and Somalia have almost nothing in common) and Libya (Somalia and Libya have almost nothing in common). The Somali, in his/her incessant need to be hospitable, is actually quite xenophobic and distrustful of outsiders. I think that those who wish to understand the Somali in Africa and the Somali in the West would do well by picking up some of the novels by Nurrudin Farah and Diriye Osman.

I liked the sound of it, it seemed like a kind of ‘fish out of water’ coming of age type thing featuring a community that doesn’t really get much media exposure. Then I got to the part about how its going to be about ‘Jihadi recruitment’ and..... that seems more cliche and less appealing.

Honestly, I think it would be almost impossible to do this kind of show without addressing it. It’s a huge issue in the community here (I am local), not because there’s a lot of recruitment going on, but because there has maybe been some recruitment, and we don’t know the story, and we’re trying to figure it out but can’t seem to get anywhere, and the fact of it has cast a sort of shadow over everybody.

It would be like trying to do an in-depth piece about religious life in rural Kansas without addressing the Westboro Baptist Church. WBC is not a part of most people’s daily lives, but it’s a big factor in the overall community life, particularly in how the community is seen and understood by outsiders.

I really hope that the show focuses more on the community and dealing with the kind of issues K’Naan addressed in Troubadour than a strictly Jihadi theme. Al Shabaab has a significant presence in Somalia and Northern Kenya. I’m sure there are refugees that have relationships with members and that recruitment among refugees has occurred. There’s just so much more than that. I’m hoping for more K’Naan than Bigelow.

Minnesota has the largest Somalian community outside of Northern Africa. That being said, Minnesota is the worst state in the nation for racial disparities in education, wealth, and income level. The onslaught of racism directed toward the Somalian communities is appalling and like nothing I have ever seen. This series will most likely show a puppies and rainbow version of the situation, rather than the truth.

Weird assumption considering the director hasn't directed anything "puppies and rainbows" in her entire life, and K'naan has never sugar-coated his life story.

Sounds like both projects will let her show all the torture and violence she loved to portray as necessary to stop evil things from happening.

Hopefully that won’t be the case. K’naan has been a pretty strong voice against gang violence and improving conditions both in Somalia and in Somali communities here in Canada. I’d be interested to see how his project shakes out.
