I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- Buzzfeed is the equivalent of that kid in high school who runs up to groups of other kids yelling, “HEY GUYS!!!! GUESS WHAT?!??!?!?!?” while practically hyperventilating.

Also, the cutesy headlines they give to often serious, sometimes even tragic, subject matter is disgusting. I’m guessing they went with something like This Rape Story Will Brock Your Socks Off.

"Here Is The Powerful Letter The Stanford Victim Read Aloud To Her Attacker" was the headline of the article you are bitching about. Good try though.

      Economics Teacher: Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Simone: Um, he’s sick. My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

      Economics Teacher: Thank you, Simone.

      Simone: No problem whatsoever.

I’m reading that they got a victim’s narrative out and it reached people and they’re happy about that.
Don’t we want this lady’s version to be the one with reach?
I’m not entirely sure what the problem is.

Wasn’t Katie J.M. Baker a Gawker writer at one point in the not-so-distant past? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yuuuuuup. She worked the “rape beat” for Gawks too before she was poached.

It’s definitely a weird success to tout, especially considering Buzzfeed did nothing but reprint someone else’s words. It’s the equivalent of being proud of how many likes your misappropriated Marilyn Monroe quote-as-an-image got on facebook.

And places the victim’s statement on the same level as a misappropriate Marilyn Monroe quote. I.e. only important because it is marketable.

Not because it was an incredibly, heartbreakingly eloquent description of what being a rape victim can feel like. Not because it pilloried the absolute miscarriage of justice that took place over Brock Turner’s sentencing. Not because it illuminated a problem that feminists and victim’s rights advocates have been trying to shine a spotlight on for years.

      Because it’s fucking marketable.

Times like this I'm glad I'm an old and don't know what a lot of these new kid media terms mean. I think if I did, this post would make me sad. I'll grab my clicker and watch some antenna TV and maybe read a book or something.

Don’t overthink it. Don’t over-philosophize. You did the right thing, this story deserved a very wide audience, you played a small part in achieving that.

Unless your participation percentage is the real gripe (would be a dick thing to be upset about) ... let’s just celebrate this young woman’s courage. All right?

      Cultural criticism?

I see a 5000-character subtweet directed at their best frenemy Buzzfeed, disguised to look like moral introspection, but is plainly a gripe that Buzzfeed championed this story and scored.

      What are you reading?
