    I’ll ride from Tribeca to the W50s no problem - but then, to get home I have to go cross town to 6th Ave, which is basically like running the gauntlet in Apocalypto. The first part of my ride is pleasure - the final section is just downright dangerous and I hate it.

    If you want to make biking easier, you have to acknowledge that it is inherently dangerous in its present form. One idea would be to make bicycles safer, perhaps by adding two more tires for stability and manueverability. Perhaps adding extra seating since there is safety in numbers. For weather protection, I would suggest adding a roof and perhaps windows. This added weight would require a sturdier frame, so a larger chassis would be a good idea, and because the strain on the one pedaler would be enormous, perhaps a motor as well. Now you have solved the problem with biking in a city.

      Yeah, saying bikes don’t kill people is just the dumbest thing possible. No, bikes themselves don’t often cause fatal accidents. Yes, choosing to ride a bike is putting yourself at a significantly higher risk of death than taking a car. So “bikes” don’t kill people but “biking” does.

      And it’s not just bad or neglectful drivers that cause deaths, either. I had a biker crash square in to the back of my stopped car just a few days ago because he decided to stop acting like a pedestrian on the sidewalk and start acting like a car in the road while looking behind him at an intersection where no one was moving. People are idiots. So drive a car.

    My favorite thing is adults commuting on Razor scooters. Like, in a suit, with a briefcase hanging off their little handle bar.

    Bikes are free to use if you have your own

    Except they aren’t. The associated costs are much less than any other form of transportation, but they aren’t nonexistant. Inner Tubes don’t last forever, you really should clean and lubricate the chain now and then, and brakes should be adjusted periodically.

    I would call them “almost free”.

      Again, should be noted that you are still well ahead of cars. And I don’t live in New York but I understand that Transit Passes aren’t cheap.

      And while your list is comprehensive, I have never felt like I needed a bib, special shose, or clipless pedal. Standard pedals, sneakers, and regular clothes have always done fine. The rest though is pretty important. I might make do without glasses, but I definitely see their benefit and wouldn’t deride anyone for getting a special pair for cycling.

      I’m learning how to drive in Boston now, and jiminy cricket, a lot of the two way streets should really be one way. Also hard to tell if a street is two lanes or not. It’s like this place doesn’t believe that every road needs the dividing line(s) painted.

      That’s where I learned to drive! In a way, it’s great because it prepares you for almost anything. No other U.S. city scares me as a driver, after that!

      If you don’t see a one-way sign, it’s two-way despite its narrowness. I’ve lived in areas around Boston where if two cars are approaching one another, one of ‘em has to back up to a wider spot to let the other one pass. :-)

    and if you’re not on 42nd Street, the subway offers no options for getting across town.

    With the exceptions of the Q, N, R, B, D, M and 7 trains.

    For all the people who hate cyclists, I apologize as a cyclist. Most of the riders I run across here in Chicago are fucking assholes of the first magnitude. All over the road, don’t follow traffic laws, and often verbally abusive to anyone who gets in their way. And you can bet the “cooler” their bike is, the bigger d-bag they are. Jeebus save us from the fuckin’ fixie riders.

    Cyclists don’t get respect on the streets because too many of them act like dicks.

      Yes, as a part-time biker, part-time driver in Chicago, it’s really frustrating. We have (I assume) a lot more space on our roads than Manhattan, but so many bikers still don’t understand the concept that they need to stay on the side of it. A bike should not be the lead vehicle in a traffic jam.

        And a couple extra wheels for stability. Maybe a bigger more supportive seat with a back rest, a windshield would be nice, a roof for rainy commutes, and a few doors to keep your stuff safe. Pretty much the perfect bike.
