Question. I’m white. I’d rather not accidentally rent from racists, if there’s another option available. Do I go Noirbnb, or is this a stay in your lane kind of thing?

maybe have a profile pic of yourself with some friends that are poc? like so they can’t tell who is really renting and you can weed out people who ask “which one are you?” or something?

I get it. When I was online dating I would not date anyone who had specific races in their ideal match thing, and tell them exactly why. Not saying it filtered out every racist asshole, but it helped a bit, and made me feel a little better to ream some people out.

I have the same question. I don’t want to give racists my money... airbnb needs to filter those fuckers out.

Good for them. Make that money. Noir(e)bnb.

Don’t give your money to racists/bigots my minority comrades. There might not be a lot, but there are several barely known companies out there who are only too happy to cater to you and take your money. Keep looking.

Places that will never get my money. Trump anything, Walmart, Papa Johns, Chick Fil-a, to name a few. I add to the list as I learn about the owners and how they treat employees/people around them.

We don’t HAVE to utilize their services or products. They make you feel like you have too few options to be picky, but that’s not true.

If you and your partner/SO are both white and gay, the AIRBNB hosts who are also homophobes/jerks probably wouldn't turn you away once you've arrived and payment is pending. However, if your profile clearly states that you're gay you might just run into some discrimination.

They’ll discriminate however they can. Whether it’s right to your face or with “extra/hidden” charges you might find on the bill.

The key to me, is to stop/not use the service if you heard about someone having that experience. Bigots continue their ways because there’s always someone who shrugs off their behavior, because they’re not affected. Maybe they don’t think bigots are that bad. Either way the bigot stays in business because some people aren’t bothered by their bigotry.

AirBnB itself might not be racist, but until they fixed the issue, or stop doing business with those who are, I’d never utilize their service.

Despite the truly awful situation those men had to endure (with cops involved and prolly suspecting a break-in, that could have been deadly, FFS), that photo and that tweet are everything.

I thought the same thing — thank god the cops that came on that call were better human beings than those neighbors, because the picture and tweet are so much fun.

This is great. The thing about the narrative about start ups and the sharing economy that bothered me is this false belief that it is for everyone, and so progressive and about building people up and making them the captains of their destiny and in control of their success

Unless you’re a POC, because SURPRISE this new revolution is brought to you by those people who have always had the money/power all along incorporated, and historically they aren’t about sharing/giving us a platform.

So hell yes - DIY all day.

Also, good luck being that actively hateful Todd, it’s doing wonders for your blood pressure, I’m sure

It’s particularly telling that one of the darlings of startup culture is Peter Thiel, the right-wing billionaire who is friend to far-right extremists like Curtis Yarvin and Keith Rabois.

Startup Culture and the Californian Ideology cannot really be separated from the alt-right. Start-ups are about disrupting existing structures, in particular government power. And the government is one of the few power-bases that has to say “Okay, at least pretend not to be white supremacist, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, etc.” Startups are about charismatic dictators, as Thiel has said. The alt-right movement basically white supremacist strongman-fetishism for nerds, although some of them don’t mind the gays that much because of Milo Yiannopoulos.

Unfortunately, one of the built-in weaknesses of the sharing economy is the inability of startups to force their users to be good people. AirBNB is a mostly great idea that is working out well for a lot of hosts and travellers alike, but it is part of system that intends to disrupt or skirt around the onerous regulations of established industries. The only way I can see stopping individual hosts from discriminating is if AirBNB didn’t provide any information about the potential booker at all, or if they required hosts to take in the first application for each available booking, which would make the service less appealing for certain other users: if I were to rent out my roommates space while she was gone long term, I would want to be able to say no to sketchy-seeming dudes (because I would be a woman alone in the place with them).

A hotel blatantly discriminates and you can sue them. It’s not so cut and dried with the sharing economy, and I think explicitly inclusive services like these may be the only way to address that shortcoming.

One solution could be to categorize and regulate room rentals differently from vacant space rentals.

It might actually be dangerous to not allow discrimination on airbnb by blocking profile info. Like, I can imagine someone black (or asian, or gay, or hispanic, or trans, etc...) showing up for a scheduled airbnb stay, and the racist (homophobic, transphobic, sexist, etc...) host attacking them, threatening them, turning them away and leaving them stranded outside at night in an unfamiliar city, etc.

I’m not saying airbnb shouldn’t try to tackle discrimination, just that I can imagine that the current ability for a racist host to turn down a reservation by a POC might actually be keeping both parties safer in some ways.

I think if the name was too similar AirBnB would already have challenged that in court.

These things can take time, but there is a 0 percent this goes through with a “shrug” on AirBNB’s part. The look of the site is nearly identical, the logo is essentially a rotated version of the AirBNB logo. Unless they’re a shadow investor, this is a direct copy.
