Injustly short prison sentence for a fucked up crime aside, not releasing photos of people who at the time are only accused of something and not convicted IS a good thing that should be practiced in all cases. So.

And is a horrible thing when it’s only applied to one class of people. So in the interest of equality (because we know minorities will NEVER receive the same benefit of the doubt in this country), all mugshots should be released.

The victim should be allowed "20 minutes of action" with the perp - with a baseball bat.

Am I the only one who’s not all that bothered by the 6 month sentence? Having to register as a sex offender is a FAR stronger punishment than however much time he spends in jail.

When people of lesser means (and darker skin) get far greater sentences? I am absolutely bothered. This is especially true since his daddy can probably get him a job where they don’t run (or look past) background checks.

No. With that kind of reasoning, then all rapists and child molesters should get lenient sentences because they’ll be on sex offender registries.

I think it’s important to show that this is what a rapist looks like. Not a scary-looking guy waiting to pounce on you in a shadowy alley, but the guy who sits next to you in your Intro to English Lit class in a prestigious college.

I thought it was most likely to be a man dressed as a woman in a women’s restroom, but maybe I’ve been reading too many Facebook posts.

Yeah, fuck this kid, but not showing mugshots before the trial seems like a really good practice, and one that I absolutely support. The presumption of innocence is very, very important, and issues with rape convictions notwithstanding, one that our society has a problem accepting.

Then it needs to happen uniformly. Police are all too happy to release mug shots of non-rich white kids before trial.

Do hardened gangbangers in prison have access to Gawker? Don’t you think they need to view this mugshot so they can start submitting their bids for the new piece of meat?

In the end, I see him going to the Aryan Brotherhood. La Nurstra Familia is going to make a strong run, but AB will win out.

This only makes me wonder how many untold thousands of unconscious college women throughout the years have been raped in just this way? The prevalent belief was that if a man got a girl drunk enough, she was his. It was a win. That was an accepted part of the culture; the man was not considered a rapist —- at worst a bit of an opportunist. But then, for women to actually consent and participate and even enjoy sex was not important enough to figure in the equation. The boys only wanted their masturbatory pleasure.

A whole fucking lot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen women go from “Well, that can’t be rape, because it happened to me and it wasn’t his fault because I drank too much” to “Holy shit, that horrible thing that happened to me and I’ve been blaming myself for all these years was rape, and that guy I’ve been letting off the hook was a rapist.”

The whole culture said it was okay. Women were basically prey animals. That’s how I felt: like an antelope on the Serengeti with no rights or justice but only good luck or bad luck. Some callow boy had the power to either be kind and deny himself the pleasure of a drunk girl —- or please himself with her body. Nobody condemned that because it was her not knowiong her own limits. And if he got mad enough at being rejected, he could always lie and be believed. That’s the reality I lived in. When I was 17, a girlfriend and I were lured upstairs in a UCLA fraternity house after being sprayed with a fire extinguisher (“come up we’ll give you a towel”). they threw us into a room and barricaded us in with about 5 or 6 guys who proceeded to terrorize us for hours and wouldn’t let us out. They threatened us with coat hanger “abortions” and rape and were overall vicious and abusive. They just didn’t quite have the nerve to actually rape us. After some hours, they sobered up and let us go. The next night, my friends and I went back at 3 a.m. and egged the motorcycles parked in front with about a thousand eggs. We didn’t know what else to do. They said they would all lie if we called the police, and we believed they were invulnerable. They actually committed about four felonies that I can think of. I hope wherever they are, they are ashamed of themselves, but I doubt it. I still recall the name of one of them, but it’s too common a name to take the chance and write to his family about their beloved dad.
