This whole thing is just like this horrifying concoction of white privilege, male privilege, rape culture, and misogyny.

So I agree that it’s bullshit to have mugshots shown for some people and not for others. But for rape, I kind of wish all of the photos were of the smiling, yearbook type. There’s this perception that rapists are different - not your neighbor or your boyfriend or your brother. But they are. And the more we see that a rapist is an ordinary person and also a criminal, perhaps we can stop denying so fervently the crimes of those we think “have no reason" to assault someone.

YUP, thank you. I think the idea that rapists are monsters leads to more rape.

Also (as someone above mentioned), it makes them much more recognizable in real life. This shit heel will go back to smiling and looking like that as soon as he’s free. Since we can’t brand him with a scarlet R, the least we can do is show what he’ll look like in the wild.

He’ll never get the sentencing he deserved but I hope his name will be forever tied to rape and shitbaggery. May he never find gainful employment or respect.

Or if he finds respect, may it be for his eventual humility in accepting the damage he has done and true efforts to redeem himself. It goes without saying that his bullshit “hey kids, say no to binge drinking” campaign does not count.

The one consolation about this smiley face picture being used is that it will be much easier for women to identify him in public in the future. Memorize that evil smile, let’s all memorize it.

I hope Twitter keeps circulating this story with his image until the end of time.

I hope this effort to hide his crimes so his precious future isn’t affected, backfires (more than it already has) and that his face and his actions are tied together for life.

Everyone should get the same discretion and thought going into their sentencing and how it affects their future. Not just those who can afford it.

Between this and that insulting sentence, that victim needs to sue and for a lot.

If there’s anyone who hasn’t read the victim’s statement yet, please take the time to do so. It’s an incredibly eloquent and heartbreaking read, and I have so much respect for this woman for getting up there and reading it to her rapist.

Stassa, certainly the freedom of information act is relevant here, right? This is public record. How in the world can they get away with this?

Yeah, who needs a recent and official photograph of a rapist anyway? It’s not like he’s going to be a public threat to women when he gets out in six months or anything! He only fucked up for twenty minutes you guys!

I’m assuming that he won’t be one of the prisoners that will receive time off for good behaviour. I have a feeling that he just won’t be well liked in prison.

There is something that makes him seem particularly sociopathic to have that smiling photo above the details horrible crime he committed. The lack of empathy lurking behind the surface of a happy, seemingly all american, (white) boy makes it somehow seem even more unexpected and horrifying that he did it.

Then you put it in the context of why that’s being done (and how most people interpret it) and you want to bang your head against the wall. How you present the criminal or victim puts a completely different spin on their character — like when victims of police brutality invariably have a shot making men look like thugs instead of smiling shots with family, school photos, etc.

It reminds me of the Owen Labrie case; the pics used to illustrate all stories were from the court room, where he had clearly been dressed to seem like a good boy out of place in the story (complete with glasses and darkened hair) instead of the mug shot that should have been accompanying all stories.

In the wake of the discovery that the judge who handed down this sentence – like Brock Turner as well as previous similarly situated defendants before him in similar cases (yes, and also blech) - was a son of Stanford who, like Brock’s father, also found even a six-month sentence for the crimes of which the defendant was convicted unduly “harsh” because said judge “didn’t think he was likely to be a public threat or inflict harm in the future” (even absent strong additional general indices otherwise), I was rather ill to find out he will be running unopposed for re-election.

I was, however, thrilled to discover there is a petition afoot to block said same re-election.

Let’s spread the word, shall we?

Y’know, I might catch some heat for this, but I kinda wonder if we aren’t being too hard on this guy. I think instead of putting him in jail, we should just let him keep swimming.

    In Africa.

    Through a herd of hippopotamus.

    His dad can join him.

Or just let him swim in the Rio olympics but make him wear gear that keeps his mouth open so he ingests all of the toxic river water and develops a case of diarrheal illness so severe that he spends the rest of his life on the toilet far away from the rest of humanity.
