At first I was thinking “You can sue someone for getting injured working out?” But holy shit who thought it was a good idea to attach the person’s shoes to the bikes?! What if there was an emergency and they had to quickly leave the room?

ETA: Note to self, my amateur ass will never comment about cycling again. Apparently these clips are common. I still don’t like the idea of my feet being attached to anything like that, though.

Press the brake to slow the flywheel and clip out by flicking your ankle outward.

These types of shoes are very common in the cycling world.

Edit: SoulCycle’s stuff may vary a little. I’ve never attended a class.

It’s true that these types of shoes are common. But they’re also a problem. My father broke his hip when he fell on a bike and the clip wouldn’t let his foot shoot out and relieve the pressure due to a problem with the pin.

It’s amazing the harm we will expose ourselves to for fear of embarrassment, shame, or to participate in the time honored tradition of people-pleasing.

It’s a human behavior thing! We’re so social, we can’t tell the group “no” even if it’s bad for us a lot of the time.

This is why I like yoga. Almost every instructor I’ve ever had has stressed only do what your body allows you to do on any given day. Some days I can land a pose or lower myself up and down from plank a dozen times without using my knees. Some days I can’t hardly hold a down dog for 10 seconds and I do what feels right for me. But you also have to know your body. I'll push through muscle pain in a tight stress but any join discomfort and I'm out immediately.

the momentum of the fly wheel kept the pedals turning, and each rotation caused ankle dislocation

This sentence challenges everything I know about bikes, pedals, and ankles.

This also means the doofus on the bike didn't have enough resistance on the wheel to be doing anything productive.

Yeah, I mean, I’ve never been to a SoulCycle, but I assume the bikes aren’t fixed gear.

This person doesn’t know the meaning of “no”?

So what if the instructor says”we don’t take breaks”? If you’re tired, you rest..you are an adult after all and it’s a stupid exercise class, not the police. To keep going until you literally fall off your bike (in a class you are paying for) and then to blame the instructor, is insane. No wonder people are voting for Trump.

It is completely foreseeable that with little education someone could get hurt. Damned right I hold the instructor responsible, she’s not there to spur people on to injury, but to exercise safely.

I’m kind of shocked that the instructor said that. I love intense workouts, but I’ve never been to a spinning class where “take a break if you need it” wasn’t said at the outset.

So, at every single SoulCycle class I have ever taken, the instructor has been very clear that you should modify or go at your own speed if you have to. I think that it would realllly go against their company MO for an instructor to bark at someone not to stop. Their whole thing is positive affirmations, and if they are good at one thing, it is sticking to their branding.

SC has a lot of issues, but either this instructor was having a bad day or that’s not quite what happened. Also, they definitely make you sign a waiver before you start, so not sure what she thinks she’s getting out of this.

Also, even if your feet are locked to the pedals, the shoes are velcro. If you are sick, it is very easy to stop and just slip your feet out of the shoes themselves, leaving them clipped to the pedals.

Almost every single spin studio rents out shoes to basically everyone but their most dedicated clients, who probably have their own. They’re disinfected after every use.

This is the problem with programs like SoulCycle and Crossfit: the trainers aren’t always qualified and they push customers, who are not athletes, to train as athletes do without providing proper instruction or supervision, and often failing to take seriously the limitations of their students. Sure, you have to push yourself to make gains, but you need to know what you’re doing and have a trainer that knows your fitness level and provides guidance based on that knowledge.

Instructor sounds like an idiot - but I spin and I cycle, and I have never taken a soul cycle class. I clip into my bike and into my spin bike. I have fallen off my bike still clipped in - very funny because I landed on grass; on pavement I would have broken my arm. How the hell does one fall of a stationary bicycle? Just because your clipped in doesn’t mean you have to pedal.

The instructor does sound like an idiot. It’s amazing how badly inexperienced cyclists can fuck up on their bikes. Just the other day I saw someone faceplant while coming up onto a curb because they lost balance and just held the bars for dear life as their bike went under them...So, it’s not surprising to me that people who are new and don’t have proper instruction don’t think of things like “let go of the bike” or “stop pedaling” when they get into trouble.

The same reason anyone takes any kind of exercise class, I guess. You could do absolutely any workout on your own without a class, but people like group classes and generally get more out of them.
