Ali was the anti-Trump. He had the bravado and the confidence, but in a positive way. He used his fame and influence to oppose the war in Vietnam and racism.

He was the most influential athlete of the last century. A man of tremendous love and dignity.

Thanks. Ali was the greatest athlete of all time. I love Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens, and even Pele, but it was Ali.

I want this quote to be true because it’s fantastic, but I can’t help but want some source... because you know, superimposing text onto public figures is a thing. I won’t be surprised if and when someone proves this to be true.

It certainly sounds like him. Ali didn’t so much talk as he made pronouncements.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعون “Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return” َ

This Muslim makes dua for our brother tonight.

This American makes a more relatable comment:

10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you’re going home.

You better not be a racist troll, because that would be disrespectful on so many levels, and all you would be doing was showing that people cared enough about Ali and respected Islam enough to not try and decipher what you had written

It was a reference to the Tool song, 10,000 days, which is about as long as Ali had Parkinsons, and it was an actual Arabic translation and the actual Arabic lettering from an actual Muslim (Islam holds that the Arabic language is preferred when speaking a prayer, and that is the prayer for the dead, but, using the language that you feel most comfortable with to express your feelings is better than parroting something you don’t understand. Suffice it to say that Allah alone knows best).

I am deeply saddened by this loss, as Ali arguably did more for acceptance of Islam in America than anyone else in the last 40 years.

Wouldn’t normally bite on a comment like this, but Ali deserves the clarification

Met him very briefly in a McDonald’s in 1998. Gracious, kind, patient with everyone who wanted to talk or take a picture with him. An exceptionally brave man.

Say not in grief ‘he is no more;’ rather, live in thankfulness that he was. I am thankful that we got to share the world with him.

Had the honor of meeting him briefly as well when i was a teenager. He gave me a couple of quick (yet slow) feints with a mischievous smile. It’s rare for a celebrity to be a natural crowd pleaser yet also a man of integrity. The GOAT was both.

When I was a little kid in 1975 or 1976, I met him at O’Hare airport. I screwed up the courage to ask him for an autograph, and he jokingly said to me, “You looking for a fight?” I about wet my pants.

After that he invited me to sit down at his table with him and the few other people he was traveling with. He bought me a Coke and asked me about school. All-in he probably spent almost 10 minutes with me. That graciousness is pretty amazing. I was a little white suburban kid whom he didn’t know at all, and he took that much time to make me feel good.

At the time, he was certainly the most famous person in the world. Would any of his celebrity analogues today do the same. I don’t know who the world’s most famous person would be now, but would LeBron do the same (putting aside that you’d never see him in an airport)? Would Kim Kardashian?

Saddened and my sympathies go to the family but honestly not surprised at the news of his passing. He’s been incredibly ill in recent years now, with him looking shockingly bad at the Opening Ceremony at London 2012.

I kind of wonder if we could even have and appreciate someone like him, today? We’d probably just call him a dick and dog him out on Twitter all day. And, who is left in boxing right now? Floyd Mayweather? Manny?

Oh, there was a time in his day where he was absolutely reviled. America (most of it, anyhow) came to its senses, due to his exceptional skill, charisma, and razor-sharp wit.

Pro boxing was a bigger deal in those days, but that was a long time ago. I was raised on it, would love to enjoy it again, but the sad truth is that it has been in sorry fucking shape for a long time.

That’s kind of my point. These seem fewer and further between. And, maybe it is just a gut feeling. Maybe, the speed of the media today has bulldozed certain “Alis” that never got to shine. Maybe the sheer amount of media kind of levels out how we view talent.

I don’t know. I just don’t see many (any?) at the moment in sports.

My grandfather spent twenty years fighting diminishing physical health as a wasting disease killed him. By the end, death came as a mercy, but it didn’t and doesn’t make us miss him any less. Muhammad Ali will be surely missed, both for who he was as a public figure, and for who he was as a father.

Surely you guys have another post coming about how Trump, hater of Muslims, has tweeted that Ali, devout Muslim, will be missed by all?

Stupid to such a level that he can't even get out of his own way.
