“38-litre hats” is a hell of a phrase...

    Just like “bagged milk.”

The fuck is wrong with Canada?

For all our fuckery, I’m glad I don’t live in a place where the milk comes in a bag like some kind of teat.

“Once upon a time, before a piece of journalism was published in a magazine or newspaper, it usually underwent one or several rounds of edits, designed to make its arguments more forceful, its narrative more compelling, its language more unified, or its spelling and grammar more accurate.”

I’m a writer/editor/copy editor/proofreader (you wouldn’t know it from my comment history!) Someone once said to me, “You’re lucky. You can do what you do for the rest of your life as long as your eyesight holds up. No backbreaking labor, no periodic licensing and re-licensing exams, no mobility issues to deal with, English is becoming ever more common, not less so…”

And I said, “At this point I have a useful skill fewer and fewer people seem to want. I’m the guy who knows how to change the ball on the IBM Selectric if you want to change your font.”

By the way, in the passage you quoted above, I’d change that last “or” to “and.” All those tasks were done; one wasn’t done to the exclusion of the others.

Would you also remove the comma after “edits”?

Also, should I have put the question mark in the previous question inside the quote marks? And should I have put a comma after “after”? And it is ok to begin a question with “and”? And in a question asking if it’s ok to begin a question with “and” should the “a” in the “and” in quotes be capitalized?

Also, should I have put a comma after the first quoted “and” in the previous question? And if so, should that comma go inside of the closing quote mark or outside?

      Thanks!

    In case anyone’s interested,

“Ten-gallon hat” is the result of a linguistic mix-up. “Galón” is the Spanish word for “braid.” Some vaqueros wore as many as ten braided hatbands on their sombreros, and those were called “ten galón hats.” English speakers heard gallon.

According to Stetson, a 10-gallon hat only holds about 3 quarts.

Or whatever that comes out to in those odd Canadian measurements.

“Hat” itself has a fascinating etymology: The French refer to a head covering as a “chapeau,” from the middle-French “chapel,” a derivation of the late Latin “cappa.”

And English speakers were all like, “That’s a nice hat, Frenchy.”

Actually the high school band who performed is hardly inner-city. The band was the Linden High School marching band which is from Linden a city near Elizabeth and Newark but not actually part of those cities and is a blue-collar working town (formerly GM had their truck manufacturing plant there pre-downturn) but it also is the site of the Bayway oil refinery and a pharmaceutical research facility boarders it in Rahway.

And the hats aren’t even 10 gallon hats. They are these. Likewise they weren't cheerleaders, they were the color guard which is part of a marching band
