    Lauren, one question:

How difficult was it to contain the fangirl while talking to Gloria fucking Steinem?

I actually had 5 minutes with her, but I spent two of them just repeating “it’s SUCH an honor...”

I met her at a book signing at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women and had all of these witty one-liners I wanted to say to her when it was my turn, but all I could stammer out was, “Your jacket is so cool.”

She spoke at my college years ago for a book tour she was doing and the thing that stuck out to me the most was that she was extremely adamant that women's rights, the rights of people of color, and the rights of GLBTQIA individuals all went hand in hand and that we could not ignore one in an attempt to gain favor for the others.

They really do all go together. The systems that keep women “in their place” are many of the same that are used against people of color or anyone who is different in any way, and homophobia is so tied in with sexism and how men and women “should” be. When you see how sexism combines with racism and homophobia to make things exponentially worse for women of color and those who identify as LGBTQIA — especially trans men and women — it’s appalling.

I always feel so Pollyana when I say things like this, but the more we can all work together, the more we can achieve in the fight for equality.

I wonder if anyone predicted this massive backslide in women’s reproductive rights back in the mid-90's.
