No no no, silly woman. Don’t get hysterical. This is all just about mental illness. Not everything is misogyny. These men, while rapists and murderers, certainly weren’t misogynistic. No, to admit they were is a bridge too far and unfairly besmirches them. They never admitted they killed women because of sexism. And even if they did, it’s still mental illness. Sure, I may concede it’s a little of both, but you’ll never get me to admit our culture aids this kind of specific violence. In fact, you’re not going to get me to admit our society is sexist at all. I know what sexism looks like - something from the 60s, right? Yeah, we’re better than that now so everything is obviously fine. /s

Also, didn’t you hear about that woman who killed a man that one time? It totally happens both ways so it can’t be sexist.

Don’t forget the 24 year-old teacher tied to a cinder block at the bottom of a pond:

    http://www.phillyvoice.com/da-identifies-...

My friend, Nicole Rhoads Peppelman, was tortured and mutilated with a chainsaw by her ex-husband last year. She had been divorced less than 3 months (after a 5 year ordeal). Her young son was left to discover the blood massacre and 3 beautiful children were orphaned. She had a PFA, reported him for child/spousal abuse multiple times, babysitters, the school, and relatives reported him as well, and they gave him shared custody in their divorce....of the very kids he abused! Our family court system is corrupt, broken, and probably the root cause for most of these murder/suicides.

We MUST do a better job.

As long as the guns are easily available, it’s as it should be. Nobody matters more than guns. Nothing to see here.

Countries with stricter gun laws still have violence against women, you do realize that, right? Even if the US outright banned all guns, abusive men there would just find something else.

On top of that, there was the guy in South Korea who stabbed a woman because he said women ignored him. He waited 40 minutes for a woman to show up in the restroom and then stabbed her to death. Incidentally, he didn’t bother wearing a dress to hide in there. It’s almost like you wouldn’t need to.

Right? “We know a man did a bad thing because he hated women, but DON’T HATE MEN. Oh, no one is hating on men? OKAY WELL DON’T START. It would hurt our feelings and that’s WAY worse than hate crimes against women.” - Those protesters, basically.

Another one I missed, which a reader just emailed me: Man shoots his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend, and himself. The shooter in this case died, while his ex survived and is in stable condition. Her boyfriend is in critical condition.

As a woman, and a mother to a little girl, this is just terrifying. To think that a man (or boy) may hurt her because she doesn’t say hi to him, turns him down at a bar, or breaks up with him, makes me want to lock her up and never let her out. What else do I do? The sad thing is that in reality I will have to put the burden on her to try to protect herself, because society isn’t going to change. Men like the ones above will always be out there. That’s what bothers me. That the burden is always on the woman because things won’t change. Fuck that. Fuck those men, I hope they get every bad thing they did served right back to them.

As a mother of boys, this is terrifying. How do I fight against an entire culture that tells them they’re entitled to own a woman? That a woman making them feel bad is asking for it? It feels insurmountable some days. I don’t know how to ensure they treat women as humans. I do my best, and my husband sets a good example, but shit like this... Ugh. I always thought having boys would be easier, that I could teach them to dismantle the patriarchy from inside. But it's really hard to explain and resist a system that does a decent job of hiding itself and benefits them.

The fault is not just with men, and violent misogyny starts early. My daughter is about to finish kindergarden and has been constantly attacked during recess all year, by multiple boys (5 out of 12 in the classroom). They constantly interrupt her play at recess, chase and grab her and hug her too tight, not letting her go; chase her down and grab her and kiss her neck; kick her when she’s not paying attention to them; try to spy on her going to the bathroom, and of course there’s teasing and namecalling and chasing girls around saying “we hate girls”...and despite multiple meetings the teacher and yard-manager and principal (all female) think I’m just overreacting to normal kid stuff, that these boys “are just learning how to control their energy.” When I say that they are learning they can do whatever they want to girls they look at me...The young, female teacher actually told the class that to forcibly kiss others is wrong because it passes germs. This is public school in Manhattan. Is it worse elsewhere? What can I do beyond talking about feminism? I’ve told her she should hit them but she counters she will just get in trouble, and its true.

And those are only the ones that were deemed worthy of widespread coverage. The women daily killed in far more prosaic ways remain unknown.

If you and Jezebel could do a version of The Counted for women killed by male partners for one year, it would be horrible and wonderful at the same time. Male America doesn’t care.

It’s amazing how being pregnant increases your chances of being killed. Something like 20% of pregnant women deaths are by homicide. In comparison 6% of deaths are homicides for women of comparable age who are not pregnant.

Is it more accurate to say being pregnant increases the odds your death will be by homicide (but doesn’t necessarily increase your odds of being killed overall)? I figure pregnant women would engage in less risky behaviors than women in the general pop, lowering the likelihood of them being killed by, let’s say, falling off a cliff in a national park.

That makes sense. And actually makes it more depressing. Pregnant woman doing the most to avoid danger and the danger is their significant other...or ex.
