Who is not aware of gun violence? If these celebrities stage a sit-in at NRA headquarters, I’ll be impressed. That won’t work either, but I’ll be impressed.

These celebrities have no interest in actually making a difference. They’re just paying lip service to their fans, who are overwhelmingly left leaning.

These are the same people that have armed body guards everywhere they go. They do not want guns banned.

I’d be curious how many of the people who partook of the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 donated money to ALS charities in 2016.

Most of the people (non-celebs) that I know of that did the challenge didn’t donate. I think their mindset was that someone they tagged would donate, and so on and so forth. People love to pass the buck these days!

I don’t have the stats, but I remember reading that it actually raised a considerable about of money for ALS research. (talking seven figs+)

Hillary was actually wearing a true orange yesterday, while handing Trump his metaphorical arse. Good luck to her, running against the NRA.

Nobody who wants to be able to stock up at Walmart is suddenly going to reconsider because Kim Kardashian wore an orange sweatshirt with no pants.

That none of them (at least those listed the article) bothered suggesting people learn more or donate or get involved is just remarkably tone deaf. It’s like if celebrities took the Ice Bucket Challenge without sharing the link to donate. It’s a nice, but ultimately empty gesture.

I work in marketing for nonprofits. When the Ice Bucket Challenge was a thing, every single one of us was scratching our heads trying to find that same lightning in a bottle. Because that went viral, and it actually raised a shit load of money. The wear orange thing lacks the focus and doesn’t have any kind of actual goal in mind.

A thousand times this. Thank you. I work in nonprofit comms as well and the ALS thing was just... an anomaly. The good thing about is that a lot of the celebrities who were actually doing the challenge talked about what ALS is, or at least included a link to donate or said something about donating in the video. A lot of the normals who did it, did not.

I like the idea of the #WearOrange campaign but only when accompanied by a real action item. “Today I wear orange in honor of victims of gun violence. Take a stand. Call your Senator about XX legislation, or donate to www.websiteoffoundingorganizationhere.org.” Just wearing orange and marking a hashtag is about as helpful as fuck all.

Also wearing orange is a photo and static and it’s not hard to look cool wearing orange, the ice bucket challenge was a video, and randomly quite often hilarious and it allowed time for the challenge taker to read a script or hold up flash cards AND - and this is a big AND - it went viral because there was a call to action; it went viral because of the nominations. You nominate three people to take the challenge, the viewer watches three more videos, listens to three more people reading a script or holding flash cards and you have yourself an awareness campaign that money can’t buy. There were snarky comments at the time about “do you even know what ALS is?” and I was like “who gives a shit? it’s now a household word”.

Celebrities Need to Put Their Money Where Their Gun Violence Awareness Selfie Is

Listen, it took them like THIRTY MINUTES to pick out their orange shirt, or like a lot of time to put an orange filter over an old photo. TIME! Time that they could have been doing other things like, NOT WEARING ORANGE?

WILL IT NEVER BE ENOUGH FOR YOU PEOPLE?! DO YOU WANT THEIR BLOOD TOO? JESUS!

To me, it’s the same as people posting “mexico” or “blue” on FB as a mystery cancer awareness insiders thingie. #WearOrange is so random. It could be a campaign for the new season of OITNB. In my country, people wear orange to support the national soccer team. It’s all: I’m doing something good, without actually taking the trouble to really do something.

Yes yes yes. Reminds me of the stupid trend of posting fruit on FB to “confuse the guys lol but spread awareness, you know.” I know it’s all in good fun and whatever, but things like this do jack shit to contribute to “breast cancer awareness,” let alone actual research.

There must be a good way of saying “wear orange, give green” that is hashtaggable and effective.

Or maybe celebrities just don’t want to start asking for money for every cause they want to seem (or are) “invested” in?

Or maybe it's just famous people trying to look like they care to make themselves feel better.

Usually when celebs do ask people to donate to cause there are tons of comments that basically say “why don’t you donate.” I wonder if they think it’s easier to donate privately and show support publicly in the hopes their fans will be inspired without being asked.
