As someone who has actually done real work lobbying for gun control, I hope that Amy’s selfie is mocking this #WearOrange “slacktivist” nonsense. Wearing orange is bullshit; if you really want change, write your Congressman and Senators and then vote for candidates in November who support gun control measures.

It definitely isn’t satire as she posted a pic of her show’s crew all decked in orange as well.

Nah. I posted this elsewhere, but 1.) I hate when women are referred to as one monolithic group, even if it’s purportedly positive, and 2.) elevating either gender above the other just hurts both genders.

Same reason why people can and do walk around all day with little rubber wristbands that say things like ‘gluten free’ on them expecting people to think they are doing something to help some noble cause because they have some rubber around their wrist.

I don’t understand the no pants thing but I’m absolutely going to give Amy Schumer a pass here. She’s done a good job talking about guns. And I like the orange thing—it was started by high school kids who started wearing orange to commemorate friends and loved ones killed in gun violence.

Plus that was one of many photos she posted. The others were with her friends, some children, other families and women in general wearing orange.

I fully support the right for any and all to walk around without pants at all times.

I mean as long as there’s underwear obviously. Otherwise you’d be sitting in gross shit all the time.

So, my (former) high school has had a recent uptick in student suicides the last few years. The first happening my senior year, and the most recent this fall with at least 1-2 per year in between. The current administration, student body, and wider community decided that the appropriate way to mourn the latest was with a hashtag (#[myhometown]strong) and students wearing the victim’s favorite color to school one day. Given that this was deemed the appropriate response rather than, say, student counseling or greater education on mental illnesses (and seeing how myself and a number of my friends were also contemplating suicide during high school, this was obviously sorely needed), I have a rather large distaste now for people who think wearing a shirt of a certain color actually does anything to further a cause.

It’s called slacktivism for a reason. You get to feel good about yourself and pretend you’ve done your part, while deep down you know that you haven’t done anything to effect actual change at all. That requires boots on the ground and money on the table, it always has, well before the internet came along and gave people the option of instant satisfaction.

Yes, after Sandy Town Elementary and the whole Joe the Plumber “your dead kids don’t trump my rights”, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this doesn’t do much to change minds.
