When you break an arm or have some kind of surgery you get an opiod. Like nothing... I swear the drop off between the first time you take it and JUST the second time is probably 50%. It was immediately evident that this shit is super dangerous and addiction can probably happen in just a couple of days if you are susceptible. Best bet: do as much as you can without the meds if you are in pain.

Not anymore. I had a filling that had to be replaced a few months ago and I was in pain and uncomfortable afterwards and the most they’d offer me was prescription strength ibuprofen (fuckheads!) I didn’t bother asking for anything stronger but he probably wouldn’t have given it to me anyway. Same for my mom when she fell about a year ago: they gave her prescription naproxen! Aleve!! And the price of oxy’s on the streets is shooting up (pun intended) because they’re getting so difficult to get, too.

My dad just had back surgery, and he told me he ALMOST got hooked on them and had a HELL of a time stopping. He said 3 days of feeling super shitty and he was taking them for like a week.
When I had my ACL done, they gave me norco and had to stop like right away. So I went with a natural cure when I was couch-bound for 2 weeks....booze, weed and call of duty.
But I’m still addicted to those things..........shit!

If you’re a doctor, stop Rxing opioids for disorders and syndromes for which they are not indicated. Read the PI dammit. And don’t send people home from minor surgery with a bucket full of Oxy. If they complain they complain.

I got a single wisdom tooth pulled, and the surgeon prescribed an entire month's worth of Oxycodone. I stuck with Motrin.

The addict in me says he knew he was heading for rehab, so he loaded up for one last good high and overdid it.

Pretty much. Being sober for years, when I knew I was heading there I couldn’t ever get the “one last party” mentality to go away. I’m just thankful my addiction was never to crazy serious substances.

Maybe this high profile case will cause some kind of action? Will drug companies be forced to admit that oxys don’t work the same way for everyone and that their dosage guidelines are totally fucked?

Probably not, but I can dream, right?

I took opioids for years when I had intractable Crohn’s Disease. As the disease went into remission, so did my drug taking. Also when you are on opioids, you easily look like an addict because when your RX gets low or runs out, you do feel panicky but it’s because you know you’re getting ready to be in a world of hurt.

Crohn’s also makes you look terrible when its at its worse. I’m surprised you tolerated the pills then.

I think many people forget that when you are on opioids that you still develop at least a physical addiction which makes dealing with the pain that much more difficult if there is ever a reason you’re refill is delayed.

I have worked with doctors in various specialties for years and not one of them handed out painkillers like candy. The crazy shit stories patients would try to make fly when they’d beg and yell to get early refills were amazeballs. It wasn’t funny, it was sad. I know of a specialty now that deals with incapacitated patients and they give them random pee tests during home visits to test for painkillers. You'd be surprised how many come back negative because their family and friends are stealing their pain meds. Nice, huh? The best tool docs have are the statewide registries for prescriptions, they can put in a search and see the drug (abusing) history of people. Obviously what really needs to happen is people need better access to affordable treatment. Ha ha, like that will ever happen.

I am sorry but Fentanyl is for major surgerical procedures I know this because my mother had liver surgery for her cancer. It is not something that should be handed out after. This is sad.

I don’t think it is. My understanding is that the “fentanyl” in pill form is manufactured in China and illegally shipped here. The Opium Wars come back to us as Kermic retribution.... It is my understanding that in the U.S., fentanyl only exists in IV, lollipop, and patch form.

Most common is IV and the patch here in the US. U can’t believe people can buy it in pill form it’s not that type of opiate.

    Dear Everyone:

When your doctor asks “are you currently taking other medication?” Tell them all the fucking medication you’re taking.

When your doctor prescribes you a specific dosage of mediation to be taken at specific times. Do what they fucking say.

When your pharmacist hands you the medication and you realize you didn’t pay attention to your doctor your pharmacist will repeat the dosage instructions and you should do what they fucking say.

When you get home and realized you didn’t listen to any of these smart men and women with better educations than you, please read the instructions that are printed on the medication you just picked up and do what it fucking says.

If you somehow manage to blow past all of these barriers set up for your own safety, and pop handfulls of pills in YOLO amounts at YOLO times, then you deserve your fucking overdose and have no one to blame but yourself.

As I said, there are two or more human beings with a combined medical education lasting more years than you’ve been alive who explained it to you before this point.

And if you’re STILL confused, call either of them up and write the answers down.

It’s just...Christ, there’s only so many ways to lead the horse to water before it’s time to let the stupid thing drown itself.

It was a tragic loss for modern culture when he passed. He was a true artist and visionary. (even if he was against the internet at times) I hope one thing may come from his death, a final contribution to the world if I may. I can only hope that this sparks a conversation, and call to arms against opioid addiction. The epidemic is nationwide, and we need to take action. I firmly believe that decriminalization is the way to go. Not that everyone should be on drugs, but instead of jailing people, we need to instead focus on getting people into rehab, and treatment. We couldn’t prevent this death, but maybe we can lead the way to saving other people.

    Just a dream I guess.

My fiance’s a nurse in a behavioral health hospital.....she HATES working on the addict floor. 99 percent are heroin/opiod addicts and they’re drug seeking motherfuckers with a “poor me” complex.

It turns people into pathetic lumps of mush. And you’re actually seeing movement on drug addiction in Congress bc of how many white people it’s effecting nowadays.

First pill mills, then feds shut them down, then pills became very expensive, and the cheap version, heroin, steps in. Game set match.

What a nice attitude your girlfriend has, and how amazing that she knows the whole background of 99% of the people on a floor she doesn’t even work on 100% of the time. Score one for an ounce of compassion.

I’d venture to say more people would seek out help for their addictions sooner if they weren’t automatically referred to as “motherfuckers” and “lumps of mush”. You have no idea how quickly and thoroughly prescription medication can take hold. I managed to get up and (miserably) go to work every day while I was in the grips of my addiction. I was a wife and a mother, and in genuine, crippling pain that should have been treated by a surgery that I asked for multiple times. When I ran out of medication I had to hide my withdrawal symptoms from everyone around me, crying alone in the office bathroom as I felt like I was being torn inside out.

God forbid you or your perfect girlfriend ever find themselves suffering that kind of emotional, physical and mental anguish because I wouldn’t wish it on MY WORST ENEMY. But I’m sure you’ll be right back to tell me how you’ll never be in that situation because you’re the most powerful in control couple in the world.

Can you imagine if someone died from pot? I just THINK I’m going to die. Mostly because I get convinced I have stopped breathing. I will call people and tell them I have stopped breathing, while talking to them I just KNOW I’m not breathing.
