undergraduate tuition will run you roughly $60,000 a year

Where does all that money go?

I attended one of the best public universities (tuition-free) in Germany and they currently spend 11.000 Euros per student, so about $12.500.

Do they serve Filet Mignon on gold plates in their marble mess halls every day?

Did you guys get your books for free as well? And is on-campus housing also free? I went to university in Canada when tuition was extremely cheap, but books and housing (obviously if you don't live at home) still made university an expensive venture.

I went to NEU and unfortunately there is no Filet Mignon nor golden plates. However, this article may help answer your question:

SEMI-RELATED: Had a buddy who went through the law school. He eventually found out that the post-grad hire rate was something like 19%. Paid FAR out the ass for that 19% “leg up.”

Grads of some non-tier-1 law schools are suing over deceptive promises. I recall that one school included non-law-related jobs in its hire rate stats (because nothing says JD like being a barista at Starbucks).

I cannot believe that there are so many people “paying” $60k a year - or whatever insane amount they pay after getting their financial aid lifetime of bondage -to go to college. That is just crazy. I think my entire college education cost less than $20k for 4 years 20 years ago (not including the cost of living bc I lived at home). Yeah, most colleges are a ripoff, but no one really forced these folks to borrow so much for their degrees either. I went to a public city college and did more than fine for myself. People who pay $60k or $40k a year to party and get a diploma - or even just to get a diploma from a middling institution - are either rich or morons (or both).

you obviously don't understand the economic changes that have occurred in our country in the past 20 years. Were you just released from a long stint in prison or something?

Nope, I get it. I went and got a graduate degree from a great institution afterward bc I graduated in the middle of a terrible recession. But I don’t think anyone today is better off bc they want to some middling private school that cost $60k a year over a public institution. The reality of today is that you are better off avoiding crushing debt than going to an expensive undergraduate institution

I love it when astonishingly bad ideas see the light of day. At no point, in what one must assume were multiple levels of planning and approval, did anybody stop to think how bad this looks.

I worked at Northeastern for a few years, and they’re so desperate for anything they can call innovation, this, sadly, just doesn’t surprise me. I saw astonishingly bad ideas be supported through every level of the intense bureaucracy at that place...it was nuts. I swear, all you have to do is reference innovation in a proposal and it’ll be ok’d. Batshit crazy.

It is kind of impressive that no one said, “This seems a bit like Ponzi scheme . . . and also a bad idea.”

My daughter and I took a tour of Northeastern a couple years back when she was looking at schools. The entire tour consisted of “and here is our world class cafeteria with sushi and starbucks coffee” and “here is our world class exercise center with 400 treadmills and Nautilus which of course is available to all students” and “check out our dorms with big screen TVs and 1000 premium cable channels” and the like. Nothing at all about the academic programs.

It’s not just Northeastern. A lot of American universities are now “customer-oriented service businesses offering full amenities.”

Holy crap, that has to be the most cynical way to drive up the alumni giving participation rate I’ve ever seen. I mean, I know that’s part of the advancement / development game - you get them to give even $10, the rate goes up, and foundations and other grant-giving organizations like to see that. Once they’re in the habit, you can often get them to give higher amounts when they can.

But this? Why not just offer alumni the opportunity to engage in cage matches, and whoever is left standing gets it paid off? You can charge for tickets and PPV to raise money, and assign random handicaps/restrictions to participants to make the fights more interesting.

They must have a low opinion of the educational value they provide to their own alumni if they’re sending out a message like this.

You should find out who that Northeastern donor with the “innovative idea and support” is. Bet it’s a douchebro in the banking or tech industry.

I’m not saying that all students who go to Northeastern are douchebros because that would be fucking insane.

I will say that the one alum I know of fine establishment was indeed a douchebro, and I dated him, which makes me fucking insane.

This is actually worse than the lottery because at least the lottery has to follow some laws.

Where is the proof here that they will actually “pick a winner” and give you $1k? There’s no obligation that they have to pick anyone, period.
