Speaking of Bond, I just saw Kingsman: The Secret Service yesterday and it’s a modernized pastiche of Roger Moore-era Bond films complete with a quirky supervillain with a speech impediment. If you’re a fan of that sort of campy action spy film, it’s a lot of fun.

Good action, and very good use of humor. Loved the movie, and looking forward to the sequel.

I think there is much more important and interesting work she could be doing.

Here’s a female perspective for you: just let the Bond franchise die already. It’s artistically indefensible at this point.

The way I could see to keep it going is to set it during the cold war, an era where an anachronism like James Bond is no longer an anachronism.

Sort of like Archer? A weird parallel universe with modern fashions, technology, and a USSR that’s still alive and kicking?

Okay, so I watched The Night Manager and it was beautiful and well-done, I agree. But was anyone else let down by the ending? (I didn’t read the book.) I felt like the tension just kept increasing through the whole thing, and was awesome, but at the end it just fizzled away. It was a boring ending.

    Hugh Laurie, though... spectacular.

Yeah, not so much on the ending... but it was fun to watch to get there.

I felt a bit “meh” about The Night Manager - I loved the acting and adored the tension between Hiddles and Laurie, but overall the writing was kind of uneven. Some of the dialogue was so... well, cheesy - especially Hiddles’ lines often made me cringe with second-hand embarrassment (that whole “gangster” routine in the second episode... I just couldn’t take it seriously at all). Maybe I expected too much from it, given the incredible cast and the intriguing premise.

On a semi- related note, Tom Hiddlston would make a great Bond villain..

Oh yeah, I don’t want Tom Hiddleston to be Bond, want him to be a sharp cheekboned, silky voiced bad guy. Idris is the one true Bond.

I started watching The Night Manager for Tom Hollander, who I love in pretty much everything he’s done, but I stayed for Olivia Coleman. I can’t tell you how much I loved seeing a woman in her 40s, not conventionally attractive and heavily pregnant kick ass and take names in a spy thriller. Can she be the next Bond?

Olivia Colman should be in everything, really - she is so amazing, I truly adore her! Have you seen Broadchurch? She was absolutely perfect in that, but she also does amazing comedy (e.g. Peep Show). Gosh, I can never stop fangirling over her...

Bond isn’t dead. Far from it. Craig and Mendes reinvigorated the franchise. If Bier is chosen to steer the next installment, hopefully she can continue the franchises resurregence. I have not watched “The Night Manager”, but I am very much looking forward to it.

Roger Deakins has a lot to do with why some of the latest Bond movies felt refreshing, but still, if they hadn’t switched up the perspective, the franchise probably would have died soon. I'm glad they are possibly mixing things up to reinvigorate the series.

After the Wedding is a great movie with Mads Mikkelsen and Borgen lady Sidse Babette Knutsen (that name, eh?) I’ve likes Susanne Bier for ages. Open hearts also good and has a Mads shower scene, pervs.

I honestly think she and Tom are too good for Bond. Because Bond is usually a bit shit. Elsewise, just same old post Cold war find that nuclear mad billionaire with sexy lady load of bollocks. A retro Bond set in 1950s would be better. They need to rest the franchise.

A Moneypenny movie though with Naomie Harris - would watch.

OMG YES! A movie all about Moneypenny! I’ve long wanted to know her backstory, and to see her get out from behind that desk (in earlier Bond films). Naomie is fabulous, Moneypenny is a cool character with amazing potential... let’s do this!

She was the best thing in the last two films and they could even have Ben Wishaw and Ralph Fiennes back being all Fiennesy like he does. In high trousers. It would be original and Harris would own it.

Do we even NEED/WANT a new Bond movie? Or is that just me? Just let it die.

This is my feeling too. My reaction to all the people campaigning for Idris Elba is pretty much: if you love him so much, WHY would you want him in Bond of all things? Why not campaign for him to have a brand new action franchise all his own? I don’t get it. I love Tom H but even he isn’t guaranteed to attract me to see a Bond movie.

It is not just you. Bond is old old and needs to go away for a long time. But the Broccoli family are squeezing the golden goose for all it can give.

Why is it so important that we revive this sexist and disgusting character and continue reimagining the empowerment of his sexual accessories, the always-infantilized “Bond girls”? Their very name keeps reinforcing their diminutive status in these movies! It’s always going to be an empire built on misogyny-meets-global politics. But tell a Bond fan that, and they’ll go down fighting tooth and nail!

What on earth!? Just admit that it’s a really fucked up, nostalgic guilty pleasure.

Night Manager was pretty good. Olivia Colman was great. Hiddles as new Bond directed by Bier with Laury as villain, bring it.
