What’s the implication of this article? That companies should never do business in countries where the law differs from the predominant morality of the business’ nation? I’m just not sure how this works in an international market, in a multicultural world.

It’s less that they shouldn’t do business in such countries and more that they shouldn’t do business with such countries. This isn’t just an expansion, this is taking actual money from the actual government of one of the worst countries on the planet.

It’s also less that the laws there are different and more that the laws there are wrong. These aren’t just laws that differ from American laws, these are laws that are violations of basic human rights.

Also, the country’s shitty laws DIRECTLY EFFECT the entire company’s business model. Its like Madonna accepting money from Russia and then letting Putin co-write a song about beating up gay people.

I don’t know how they do it at Gawker, but I was a layout editor / designer for the university newspaper back in college and every story required a full proofread from (a) the original author (b) another staff writer and (c) an editor; big stories required a forth reading by the editor-in-chief. And we borrowed that workflow from the local city newspaper. I just always figured the methods would be similar.

Almost every predominantly Muslim countrty on Earth is complete and total backwards garbage.

But oh it is their culture, that makes it okay! Why is their culture of shit alright, but America’s mostly okay and mostly forward thinking culture is evil?

People in this country have literally no idea how good they have it, and we should still strive to remove the blights that we do deal with: sexism and racism do exist, but in no way at all are they even close to as bad as many, many other countries in the world, but especially Muslim countries... But nah, America is the worst.

I’m pretty sure Uber envisions a future where they don’t have to pay ANY stupid humans to drive and just operate a fleet of self-driving vehicles.

They will just come up with another excuse, like designating the cars as male, so that women still can’t use them. Surprised they just didn’t buy and nationalize Lyft, honestly.

“Accepting a ride from a man who is not your husband or brother can land you in hot water”. Actually, as long as he is an actual cab or limo driver, this is not true. When my mother worked in Riyadh she was driven to work in a limo every day because that’s how women got to work; the bus drivers were not obligated to stop at a bus stop if only women were waiting.

That’s what makes the Uber thing interesting if it ever comes to Saudi Arabia: it will be explicitly illegal, because their drivers are not licensed as hacks. If they were, it would be no problem and Saudi would actually be a very profitable market for them.

So if a bus driver sees a bunch of women waiting for the bus and no man waiting he can just drive by them? The more I know the more disgusted I am about these Islamic nations.

Yes, that’s true. But let’s not get on our high horse. The last time I was in SF I was horrified to note that the black people still ride at the back of the bus, even if there are empty seats up front and they have to stand in the back. Wasn’t that long ago it was official.
