    Uh-oh.

When you think of the causes of global warming, you may picture an SUV before you picture a central AC unit. But almost 20 percent of electricity consumption in U.S. homes goes to AC — that’s as much electricity as the entire continent of Africa uses for all purposes.

If only there were a way to generate electricity using a renewable energy source...

I can’t think of any, because I’m too hot from the sun.

They should all be solar units, but that’s currently more expensive tech than AC. The energy use is only part of the footprint though- I just included that stat because it is stunning to contemplate how wasteful we are relatively.

A/C prevents murders. Scientific fact. Heat, full moons, and football games drive people violently insane. As a Floridian, you should know this.

      Seriously.

If people think Florida is bad NOW, take away its AC’s.

Our highways are already like Mad Max Fury Road. The streets will become The Purge.

And speaking as someone who went from Florida to NYC and spent 3 summers without an AC, I think I earned my stripes.

It’s going to be a wild ride for Florida in 30 years, between a lack of A/Cs for The Poors and the coastline being inundated.

Just bought two brand new window units. Couldn’t be happier with them. They keep the wife, kid and me cool.

What else are we supposed to do? Sweat? Maybe where A/C is a luxury but not in my house.

Anyone want my old ones? Usable but a bit loud. Not conducive for a sleeping toddler.

You may be part of the problem here. If your air conditioners are still working (keeping things cool) then you replace them why?

The new ones are probably a lot more efficient if the old ones can be properly recycled.

The world is projected to install 1.6 billion new air conditioners by 2050. It’s gonna be hot, baby. Deal with it.

If only we could install 1.6 billion fewer actual babies, it wouldn’t matter as much.

There are 3 houses on my mother’s street, where houses start at $500K, owned by people who work in A/C-refrigeration repair. Pays well, can’t be outsourced, and now, apparently, is a growth business.

Several times a week I find myself lamenting the choice to go to college instead of jumping into HVAC straight out of high school.

Good idea, except this isn’t the good old days when a lot of things shut down during the heat of the day and not much got done when the temperature soared. Those days are over. The economy runs on overdrive 24 hours a day. No one takes a 3 hour break anymore in the afternoon to sip lemonade and fan themselves with last week’s church bulletin until it cools off. It’s hot. We need cooled. Deal with it.

Thank god we have limitless energy and the power grid to support that flow.

Your point is well taken. This underscores the need to develop alternative, clean energy. That’s a whole different discussion though. The need for the power is there. We need to invest in developing clean and cheap methods of producing it. I don’t think sweating through heat waves is a viable answer.

Yeah, fuck that noise. If anything, I've become even more of a soft, simpering little manbaby, because I've got that sweet piece of 20th century western comfortech going like a mad bastard these days. How the fuck can I enjoy my streaming, gaming, and almost limitless access to any and all other forms of entertainment in all that oppressive heat?! 73 degrees is fucking HOT, man!! I mean, it's like nobody even cares how much waste heat a PS4 can give off! The ceiling fan can only do so much, y'know...

And air conditioner sales are now increasing in India, Indonesia and Brazil by between 10 and 15 percent per year, the research noted. India, a nation of 1.25 billion people, had just 5 percent air conditioning penetration in the year 2011.

Dude those places are poor and hot. Maybe if they can cool down enough in the comfort of their homes and places of business to think straight for five minutes in the summertime someone from India or Brazil or Indonesia will invent a less polluting air conditioner.
