And this is why I have read Gawker and participated in its discussion sections for years. They do much in service of speaking truth to power.

However, no media outlet is without its serious faults; it’s just that Gawker takes bigger risks with its stories, so when it fumbles, it fumbles hard.

They also admit mistakes. Unlike, say, the NY Times, which lied us into the Iraq war and never retracted their faulty reporting.

Oh god. So anyone else every have that.....”friend” that ALWAYS wants to hang out....but they are kind of annoying because they just brag and tell stupid stories and never shut up...So you tell them you dont wanna hang out anymore... and they start telling you all the reasons that you should still hang out with them...reminding you of all the “good times” that were not actually “good times”.....not realizing that that is EXACTLY why you don’t want to hang out with them.... Gawker is that person in blog form.... This proves it.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say, “For all the good that you’ve done, that Conde Nast exec article served no purpose whatsoever—and the folks who martyred themselves upon the cross of snark-as-journalism did themselves no favors in their quest to be taken as ‘serious journalists.’”

Others have said it better than I could, but there’s such a significant degree of tone-deaf desperation in this post—such a total unwillingness to face up to the mistakes that paved this publication’s current pathway—that it’s almost sad.

I say “almost,” because the self-aggrandizement and willful refusal to engage with the concerns at hand makes it kind of difficult to sympathize.

Bollea might be in the wrong—and Thiel definitely is—but the handling of the Geithner article was beyond fucking sickening. Gawker doesn’t deserve to die for that, but god damn, could you at least face your own shit, rather than trotting out, “but we did good!”

Didn’t they take that down? I’m confused. It’s like... They’ve already dealt with that. Move on. Was it about you? If so, can I have some of your money?

But mainly. Move on. But but but they did a bad mean post once! Almost a year ago! What would make you get over it?

That wouldn’t be the only time they’ve done such a thing. Posting Bollea’s sex tape, while perhaps noteworthy in that he generally sells himself as “an American hero” (or did when he was still actively pulling gigs as Hulk Hogan), really had no newsworthiness apart from simple generation of interest in salacious content.

What Gawker is trying to do here is the equivalent of the World News or a similar tabloid saying, “Well, shit, we generally ran stories designed to maximize eyes-on without doing a great deal of fact-checking up front, and utilized as much emotionally charged language as possible—but, we did real journalism a few times.”

I -like- Gawker. I’d prefer it stay around.

This shit, however, is disingenuous and patently desperate.

And it’s particularly odious in the face of the fact that they have done excellent work in the past, but they’ve also doubled down on defending shitty, horrible things they’ve done whilst calling other publications out for the same shit.

It’s like Gawker hates its own nobler impulses; for every true good they manage, they shovel a little more shit into the cart. It’s confusing—but trying to defend the shit-shoveling as “the cost of journalism” is pretty sad.

Predictable. When a cop shoots an unarmed black kid, the departments says, you can’t punish him or us. Look at all the good we do. Do you want us to just stop policing?

First, your premise is ridiculous. Comparing transgressions that are at worst, in a moral gray area to cops shooting unarmed children is just ridiculous.

      That said,

It’d be nice if the company weren’t destroyed, which is what Thiel is trying to do. Policing should be reformed, not thrown away.

I’ve been reading and commenting on various Gawker entities for over ten years and will say unequivocally that you do far more good than bad in my eyes. There have been times when Gawker is more fun to read than others, you’ve made some shit personnel decisions and some good ones, you’ve made some shitty journalistic choices and plenty of good ones, blah blah blah. Either way, I’ll always be back for more because the community that’s been created here can’t be rivaled anywhere else I’ve found. I say that not as a jab at the writers, editors or content, but as praise for keeping excellent company. I even turned AdBlock off for you guys, I don’t even do that for my friends.

Yup. But Gawker is just now learning like the Republicans that if you make your job tearing down the very institution you belong to, well, that comes back to haunt you.

Everybody hates the media now. But even more importantly, it’s fashionable to snark on everything and not recognize there’s a mix of good and bad in everything, and that’s largely because of a culture that Gawker popularized.

I love the sites. I think they do great work. Great journalism work. But welcome the the grown-up table, it’s not all fun and games here.

90% of this website is dick jokes and celebrity gossip. You’re not journalists, so stop pretending to be.

What was it that got you into legal trouble exactly, Gawker? Exposing a bribery scandal in Congress? Leaking classified pentagon memos about drone strikes?

No. You got in legal trouble because you published a hidden camera sex tape of an ex professional wrestler banging the wife of some dude named “Bubba the Love Sponge”. Hard hitting reporting, guys. Shocked there was no pulitzer. /s

You aren’t Edward R Murrow, Gawker. You’re Perez Hilton. Get the fuck over yourselves. This isn’t a war on journalism, it’s a pissing contest between a douchebag techbro and a bunch of douchebag gossip bloggers. The world is not following this story with baited breath. It’s a minor sideshow.

    Perspective. Learn it.

You guys have broken a lot of good stories and I’m obviously not a fan of Thiel’s vision of the role of the press in his techno-feudal dream society. I come here mainly for the comments but I like the snarky and openly liberal tone and the disrespect for authority and the current economic consensus.

That said, the existence and timing of this article gives me a sense of foreboding for the site’s future. I get the sense this piece is aimed more at the potential buyers that Mark Patricof is talking to.

so, you do snarky journalism sometimes and try to punch up. great. we can all acknowledge and appreciate that.

but there is never any candid admission by gawker that they’ve done anything wrong- denton’s seemed to indicate as much, but the writing staff is so smug and insulated that you get the impression they dont understand what the fuss is all about. aj’s deposition, for instance. the way leah finnegan or max read left, thinking they were some martyrs of journalism, was particularly cringe-y. and finally, why is jordan sargent allowed to stay at gawker? he contributes nothing.
