I am 6 weeks pregnant (yay) and I actually got knocked up when my husband and I were in Jamaica. Last week I went to two different doctors to try and get zika testing, and no one even knows how to do it! They keep pushing me off because they have no idea how to deal with it, and I know getting the results take 3-8 weeks, so time is somewhat essential.

In general, I think there’s a lot of unnecessary panic in pregnancy, so I’m trying to stay chill—neither of us had any symptoms for all that we got bug bites—but I’d really appreciate if someone could get their act together.

I feel you! My doctor told us not to visit any place south of Oklahoma if we were trying for a second baby. I don’t think they know how to even check anything for Zika!!

WHAT???? They don’t know how?! That’s nuts. Can’t they send samples to be tested wherever they do know how? I’d be wanting to know, too, if I were you. Sorry, not trying to fuel your anxiety fire or anything. Just better safe than sorry.

But the WHO still doesn't think this is going to be an issue at the Olympics. Cause bringing people from all over the world, having them stay for a few weeks near shit-infested waters, and then heading back across the globe is in no way going to result in infected people bringing the virus to new countries. Brilliant.

These Games are shaping up to be a shit-show of Olympic proportions (sorry) between the virus, the political crisis, the pollution, the construction delays and security concerns. It’s going to be a global spectacle alright, but maybe not the sort they’re looking to host.

So...pretty much like every Olympics in recent memory? The Games should be abolished, IMO.

This tears my heart strings. My Gyno told me a YEAR. I have a friend who is getting married in Cancun in November. I asked my doc if we were okay to go since we will be trying for baby #2... she told us not to go! My other friend was told 3 months... but I dunno its so freakin risky.

I feel the same exact way. I had coworkers laugh at me like I was being overly worried. Then I had a girlfriend tell me it can’t be transmitted through sex. Someone needs to throw a press conference that states the facts and then they can all shut up!

If you plan on visiting a Zika-infected region in the near future, the World Health Organization now recommends that you follow safe sex practices or remain abstinent for at least eight weeks after you return.

Why? So you don’t get yourself/someone else pregnant? But then why not recommend birth control? So you don’t spread zika through bodily fluids? But then why not recommend further mosquito-avoidance tips for once you’re home?

What is this recommendation trying to prevent?

      From the linked article:

The recommendation, which doubles the abstinence period the WHO previously had advised, comes after scientists found the virus lingers longer than previously thought in blood or other body fluids, spokesman Christian Lindmeier told a news briefing.

      From the CDC:

Zika virus can stay in semen longer than in blood, but we don’t know exactly how long Zika stays in semen.

How Zika lives in vaginal fluids is even murkier.

Thanks! But I got that — my question is whether this is to prevent possible birth defects directly, or to try and prevent the spread of zika person-to-person absent mosquitos?

No sex for 8 weeks? No problem, let me get my passport. Been doing that for what seems like years. Oh, wait...

Mosquitoes and all other biting insects LOVE me. I act as natural insect repellent for others, as mosquitoes will just bite me, not those around me.

When I was in Rio, I used a lot of repellent, but was eaten alive. Those mosquitoes are agressive. If I were an athlete, I wouldn’t go. As soon as its in my area, I will get it.

I guess its good I’m single and don’t plan on having kids. :-/

        2 questions:

1 - Is this ONLY if you’re trying to have a baby?

2 - What if you were on a cruise to a few infected regions but didn’t get off the ship?

I think I’m just gonna abstain from going anywhere near those places.
