    A strategic mistake from Trump. He isn’t going to be facing Bernie in the election, but by debating him now and letting him “win” the debate he’d add fresh fire to the anyone-but-Hillary section of the Democrat party and enlarge the number of people staying home in November. Anything that makes Bernie look really good right now, and even treating him like a contender would count, can only hurt Hillary long term.

    Does anybody think he will even debate Hillary? His new crop of advisors at least seem to recognize that he is easily exposed as the buffoon he is in any setting but phone interviews, rallies, press conferences, and fake softball pre-approved “interview” infomercials (lookin’ at you, uh.....sad blonde lady shill from Fox that Trump insulted and then who crawled back to him for ratings and whose name escapes me suddenly Megyn Kelly! I knew there was one too many “y”s in there!); basically anywhere he might be asked a tough question, directly confronted about his ignorance and contradictions, or really do anything but ramble on incoherently and without interruption about whatever turd floats down the Shit Creek in his head.

      This is a very interesting question (no snark). With the Clinton camp’s knowledge that more exposure is a weakness for her, and the Trump camp’s knowledge that he’ll contradict himself fifty times in the same sentence, I can actually picture a scenario in which there are no debates.

      He would face a huge amount of flak if he punked out of debating Clinton. He can’t dismiss her as a second-place loser he won’t waste his time with.

      OTOH, one of his campaign advisers blatantly said in an interview the other day that Trump envisions the presidency as being a kind of figurehead CEO. Very hand’s off with all the actual work being done by underlings. So they may try to get out of it anyway. Who knows?

    It boggled my mind seeing Bernie commenters on Reddit getting psyched up to raise charity money to fund the debate. The Young Turks alone pledge $1 million.

    It was sad. How do you become so blind in the zeal for your candidate that you can’t recognize an obvious blow-off when you hear one? When you started a new job, and the old guys told you your first task was to go to the store for some elbow grease and headlight fluid, did you do it, or did you realize you were being played for a fool? Because 10,000 Bernie Redditors spent the last day going to every store in town and raging at the clerks when they laughed in their face.

    Perfect example of an event that could prompt Hillary supporters to actually reach out in solidarity with Bernie supporters - ha look at that coward Trump, refusing a debate he already agreed to - but instead is being used by HRC supporters as yet another reason to attack Sanders. Which is amazing because it’s HRC supporters who constantly accuse Sanders of not coming together to beat Trump.

      It could be that the piece is implying through that photo that Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders supporters are on the same footing. So right off the mark, the tone has been set.

      A more ethical website concerned with progressive causes would engage in that type of community building, but alas, this is Gawker.

      Well, Trump and Sanders could have an engaging, thoughtful, rational discussion of the issues in which Bernie takes down Trump for various ethical lapses, misogny, or racism. Or, Trump could do his best to highlight the similarities they have (both are heavily anti-trade) and try and siphon some of the #BernieorBust voters.

      Then what would happen if Trump attacks Hillary? Does Bernie defend Hillary (and anger his rabid fan base) or does he agree with Trump over certain things and thus anger everybody who isn’t in his fan base?

      I don’t know why Hillary supporters would be super excited to see any of this.

      It is SO revealing how eager Sanders was to sideline Hillary Clinton in order to debate Trump. A runner-up behaving like the winner by debating the opposing party’s nominee is something that has never happened in modern U.S. history.

      And can you imagine the optics? Two old white men spending hours bashing the first viable female presidential nominee.

      Sanders may have voted correctly on women’s issues, but it’s clear by his behavior lately that he just can’t stand losing to a girl.

      The tone-deaf hubris of this idea is mind-blowing and I can hardly believe Sanders supporters thought it was a good or noble idea. It’s a narcissistic stunt by a second-rate mind, not distinguished or interesting enough to have made a mark on his own generation, but who now wants to live out his fantasy of being a “revolutionary” when his politics are, in fact, quite mild and his policy plans non-existent. This is not the behavior of someone competent or responsible or altruistic. This is an ego trip. This is fucking gross.
