An additional question I’d be curious to hear answered: If Thiel is genuinely concerned about responsible journalism, why would he fund a known fraudster like James O’Keefe?

Good luck getting that debate. Thiel seems more interested in pushing his ideology through proxies these days. Understandable, since most Americans are repulsed by his disdain for democratic institutions.

Perhaps the 10k was just enough for that moron to hang himself, which he promptly did.

(probably not the real reason, but it kinda worked out that way)

Honest question, Nick- what is the point of this piece? Are you trying to antagonize or de-escalate? Because antagonizing is simply not going to work, no matter how right you feel, and de-escalating would take all of one sentence: “We were wrong and we apologize.”

What you are actually doing is the same thing attorneys do to devalue someone’s testimony- you are attacking the credibility of the witness. In this case that doesn’t matter. Whatever kind of scumbag Thiel might be doesn’t change the fact that what you did was wrong. And to use the most self-serving quote from an article titled “Peter Thiel Is Totally Gay, People” demonstrates that you are completely aware of it.

My point is this: stop with the rationalizations. Stop trying to explain away outing people. Stop trying to excuse the leaking of a sex tape as important. It's fine if you want to do that, so long as you own the fact that that's who you are. Stop making these excuses and hiding behind "journalism." And most of all, learn to take a few minutes before you post articles and consider why you are doing it. "Why is it newsworthy to watch a feeble ex-wrestler screw his friend's wife?" "Why is it newsworthy to out a gay person?" "Why am I writing a piece directly to Peter Thiel that is only going to make things worse?"

I think you are reading into it too deeply. These kinds of patented Gawker clusterfucks generate massive amounts of page views and get the commentariat whipped into a fine frenzy.

I hate to be lawyer-pedantic, BUT...

Isn’t it an ethical violation for Hogan’s attorney to accept a 3rd party’s payment AND let that 3rd party call the shots as to the litigation strategy? Seems to me that their decision to drop a claim in order to stay out of insurance-coverage-land is one that CERTAINLY did not originate from Hogan or his attorneys.

I think there’s an argument that this is an ethical violation. And I for one, am SQUARELY on #teammotiontodisqualify.

I may have missed that detail somewhere, but I don’t remember reading anything that indicated he was dictating litigation strategy.

No, this happens all the time. Almost every third party funder of litigation is going to exercise some influence.

“sometimes our stories swing too far for my taste toward snark.”

Uh huh. Excessive “snarkiness” is what you think you are only guilty of. Not libel, cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, outing of people against their will. No, it’s just that your acerbic wit is sometimes too edgy for sensitive people to handle. THAT’s Gawker’s greatest sin. Right.

The only people getting hurt are current employees. That needs to be addressed more than anything else. I’m talking people with families, babies, and career aspirations that had ZERO involvement with Gawker’s actions in 2007 or “old Gawker”. Why should they be punished?

I may have not always agreed with what Gawker has covered, but that coverage should not put the entire company and people’s livlihoods at risk. There’s more to Gawker Media than the writers. And the writers Peter has a vendetta against have moved on. It’s equivalent to punishing the children of someone who committed a heinous crime.

I’m saying this as someone who had a lot of success at Gawker for over 4 years. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this company. I’d still be pigeon-holed performing a meaningless task at a big bank.

While I have some sympathy, from what I’ve seen, the number of babies getting tossed out with the bathwater is fairly small. I worked at a company that declared bankruptcy due to no fault of my own; I hitched up my pants and moved forward. It sucks, but there are a lot of things in life that you can’t control.

Maybe the introspective, empathetic, paternal Nick Denton, as he tries to play himself above, should have thought about all his employees before loosing AJ on the world and setting the tone for the website that, appears, to have caused its ultimate demise.

Nick, I love what your team has created at GM, but what Gawker did to David Geithner doesn’t give you a lot of moral high ground. And it makes Thiel’s case perfectly.

I can put up with a lot of filth-slinging (hell, I practically live on Gawker sites so I can clearly bask in the muck) but that’s the one that really got my goat. It was so self-evidently gratuitous and cruel that even I felt bad for being here. At least I adblock :/

Any perhaps The Huckster deserves a few million, but Thiel using his financial leverage, using the Huckster as his wedge, to break a media source is terrifying and we should oppose it even he is can do it legally.
