How many of these were rescued I wonder? I didn't get to name my dog (though I love her name).

We changed our dog’s name when we adopted her from Animal Control. But, it was the name the shelter made up, since she was picked up as a stray and they didn’t know her real name.

I renamed my rescue cat. I wasn’t calling her Faith and she’s a cat - she doesn’t give a shit.

If you’re going to give a dog a human name, it should be as generic as possible, like Steve or John or Susan.

That’s how I decided to name my cat. He is a very proud and masculine Helen.

Susan is the perfect dog name. I had a cocker named Suzie when I was younger, but we never went so formal as Susan.

Roughly 15-20 years ago the list of dog names got mixed up with the list of people names. It’s been stupid, bullshit chaos ever since.

I have a miniature pinscher named Dita. It was either that, or Mary Lou Retton (she likes to jump). But my husband would not go for that.

    Correct listing of dog names:

    1. Dog
    2. Buddy
    3. any movie/tv dog except Lassie, which is a trash name
    4. Wolf
    5. Flornell-Rare-Bit of Twin Ponds

My dog’s name is Scooby Doo, but I didn’t get to name him, as he came with his moniker when I adopted him. I have compensated by deciding that his full name is Scoobert Doolittle, and I call him “Bert” almost as often as I call him “Scoob”. Also, his second middle name is Kenneth, but he only gets called by is full, full name when he has done something really bad.

Did he also come with a green shirt and a pair of brown pants? For you, obviously!

Dog names should always start with a hard consonant, since you’ll probably find yourself screaming them around 2 AM at some point.

      Couldn’t agree more.

We have a dog named Akina (Uh-Keen-Uh). The Uh is such a weak sound to shout.

      “Goddamnit Uh-Kee... oh forget it.”

Those names are way worse than I was expecting. I assume NY has the same problem as SF where hardly anybody has the room to have a dog that isn’t lame and runty. But all those names are still unacceptable except for “Buddy,” and you can’t name your dog that because that’s supposed to be his pet name.

If you only look at Manhattan, you probably see more runt dogs, but between hiring dog walkers and the fact that there are decent sized living spaces once you get into the other boroughs, even single-family houses with yards, dog sizes go the full spectrum. (There’s a map that shows the popularity of each name by borough; you can tell Staten Islamd and Queens people have bigger dogs by the names.)

My current doge is a rescue, named Buddy. Seems fitting, hes the mellowest doge I have ever known.

My last one was a maniac jack russel named Otis.

I have had 2 cats, Lucille and Chairman Meow.

Wonder if anyone else out there named their dog Gratch. Still my favorite name I’ve ever given an animal, with Toki being a close second. I’m happy to say both those animals lived up to their name sakes.

I don’t know the reference for those names but just adding that “gratch” is Chicago-ese for garage.
