From reading the story, it appears that the perpetrators are some white guys who head up that way and kill women. Wow.

The theory I’m familiar with its that it’s multiple long haul truckers. There is little-to-no public transit and a lot of poverty up there so for a lot of folks, unfortunately, hitchhiking is the only way to get around. Especially for youth going from town to reserve and back.

I’m glad you are doing a story on this. I just saw another Facebook post on the weekend for another girl who went missing while possibly hitchhiking. Going to go see if she was found in the end. It’s rarely reported when that happens and I live right on Highway 16. :/

Nobody seems to want to solve the problem. These communities are just very isolated and options for travel are limited. And you try and suggest a solution and the racists just start in with their crap. Or your MP starts yammering about how everyone would be safer if they just stayed on the reservation. THAT HAPPENED.

MP = Member of Parliament. These are our local representatives to the federal government. Technically not mine because my town is split in half. Dude’s name is Bob Zimmer, and yes he's a Conservative. He said this in the middle of an election campaign and still got re-elected.

I know, I KNOW we have massive race problems in America. But I feel like because of that, Canada gets seen as this non-racist utopia, especially by my white Canadian friends. And it allows them to sweep this shit under the rug, because hey, at least they aren’t America. But this makes me so mad, and feel so helpless, and why doesn’t anyone CARE?!

People do care. This is why we voted in a man who promised to set up inquiries and channel more funds towards First Nations people.

I remember watching a CBC program about this years ago (Fifth Estate maybe?), and one of the lead detectives talked about looking into all the vehicles in BC and Washington state that had had the handles removed from the inside of doors, and there was some incredible amount of men they investigated who were cleared - hundreds if I remember correctly. Just men who removed the passenger handles from the inside of their car doors. That detail still haunts me to this day.

oh god, that feels like it should be on par with possession of roofies. There’s no valid reason to have done it, so it, in itself, is illegal, regardless of whether they can specifically prove that you’ve been abducting and raping/murdering people.

Same problem in Australia, with the specific problem that missing persons cases often get explained away as the person having gone “Walkabout”, a traditional journey for Aboriginal boys in some parts of Australia, generally the Outback. One particularly egregious example is the Bowraville murders of 1990-91 (there’s a great podcast about it btw). Three Aboriginal children that lived in the same street went missing within five months of each other and each time the police were called they said that the children probably just “went walkabout”, one child was 4.

Anyway, the point is that cultural training really matters in the justice system, as does broader cultural change which means listening to Indigenous people.

I live right near Highway 16. I was just discussing this with my uncle over Christmas. He’d recently met with our PM, who then used one of my uncle’s eloquent remarks regarding First Nations during an interview. Most parties are usually only interested in First Nations issues when convenient. Highway 16 needs so much more national coverage than it gets.

It is appalling how long it has taken to get any attention on this issue. The disappearance of Aboriginal Women and girls in our country has been routinely swept under the rug. One reason why that shitbag Robert Pickton got away with being a psychopathic murderer of women undetected for so many years. The scary thing is that because of various factors, these women and girls are targets for human trafficking, lots of stories from survivors to illustrate how this happens.

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/...

Furthermore, bullshit continues to happen that puts women at risk. What kind of idiot leaves 2 minor girls alone at a gas station in the middle of the night? Expired tickets or not, these are KIDS. If these girls were white, Greyhound would be bending over backwards to apologise, and/or this never would have happened in the first place:

I wish I could pretend that this is just a weird blip, but it’s not. The systemic racism towards indigenous people in Canada is so very entrenched. Beyond even the horrifying cases of women, missing indigenous kids frequently don’t even warrant an Amber alert. People living on reserves go without proper resources or even clean water at times. All of it is a shameful national disgrace, coming from a country that loves to claim how much more inclusive we are than other countries.

Yup. I’ve lived in a variety of places around Ontario and each one has its own repugnant flavour of anti-Indigenous racism. My hometown especially is extremely similar culturally to Winnipeg, last year described as ‘the most racist city in Canada’. Re-iterating your diagnosis, it’s a shameful national disgrace.

This seriously makes me so disappointed as a Canadian. I first heard about it a few months ago, but I thought that the deaths/disappearances ended in 2011 — thanks, Wikipedia.

The deaths won’t end until the conditions are no longer desirable for serial killers. I don't see that happening any time soon. :/

From what I’d read and remembered, I’d understood it was only one person and they may have stopped because they finally kicked it — but you’re right; if it’s more than one (unrelated) person, there’s no reason for them to stop.
