It’s almost as if when you play stupid games and win stupid prizes, people don’t really feel that bad for you.

Are you seriously saying that playing the “stupid game” of selling loose cigarettes deserves the “stupid prize” of being physically assaulted and choked to death? I’m not sure you could make Dumpsterbaby’s point any more succinctly. This guy’s life didn’t matter to you.

After the hung jury in officer Porter’s trial, convicting any of the other officers was going to be a long shot. This has always been about mollifying an angry populace, not about a feasible prosecution.

Why isn’t it feasible? He was in their custody when he was horrifically injured, it’s not a question. He didn’t break his own neck.

It sucks, but you’re right. Convictions are unlikely to happen due to lack of evidence (see: Trayvon, Garner, Michael Brown, etc.) The problem is with these trials is that they keep trying to get the officers on criminal charges as a sort of “eye for an eye” justice. Rather, we should be focusing on finding out who is responsible for this death.

While the justice system shows that no one is accountable for this guy’s death, public sentiment is increasingly growing frustrated that black men are dying because of this lack of accountability.

Not unexpected. Freddie Gray being black, and poor was always going to struggle to find justice. America is rotten from the top down.

Did he have probably cause to arrest Grey? No. Did he put the seatbelt on Grey like he was supposed to? Also no. Those are the facts, as is the not guilty verdict, sadly.

I mean... electing another Clinton will totally take care if this... like they dealt with violence before: By cutting welfare. That’ll totally decrease crime!

There is no question that they were never going to set the precedent of calling an arrest without probable cause assault. They would end up being forced to prosecute half the cops in America.

I’m sorry, did any judge ever rule the police lacked probable cause? I understood that it has been long established that flight from authority in a bad neighborhood is probable cause.

Why would. A trial by jury is a right that can be waived. Apparently for a bench trial.

A goodly portion of bench trials are cushy arrangements to enforce a double standard. Let’s say there was a choice in how you file taxes. Most people file the normal forms, but some people - by virtue of being well connected - could instead ask a friendly or sympathetic tax judge to decide how much they owe and let’s say that when asked to do so by well-connected people they routinely came up with 5%. Let’s say they came up with a 40% for any regular Joe off the street, but routinely hit that 5% mark for cops and the well-connected. Would that be a fair system just because we’d theoretically have that choice?

If bench trials weren’t just a way to avoid justice for certain groups then I wouldn’t be complaining about them. In this case, like many others, they are just a way to ensure that justice is not really served.

Oh shit, this can’t be good. Acquitted of all charges? I’m wary that this might turn out more riots like the initial incident. This is total bullshit. Cops literally getting away with murder? Man, fuck our “justice” system.
