The good news is, I’m sure they won’t abuse this law to silence any opposition to police brutality and police-state tactics. After all, governments in the South have a long history of fairness in their dealings with African-Americans.

The first federal judge will invalidate this entirely by pointing out that cops aren’t a protected class and are therefore ineligible for anything that is considered a “hate crime”.

Yes, many young people are taught by their parents to hate police officers. It all started back when police officers were enslaved. Even when they were freed, they had to use separate water fountains. Then a big supreme court case desegregated the poorer police children from their wealthier non-municipality based families. The long history of police officer hate will finally end with this bill.

Yeah well I think people should be with their own kinds and those police should go back to Copland where they came from.

This is the problem with hate crimes legislation. It is crimializing thought rather than the act itself.

If you hate (insert group here) that makes you an asshole. If you hate someone that you commit a crime against, that makes you a criminal asshole. But you shouldn’t get extra punishment just because you are an asshole.

Well the argument for hate crimes laws says it’s not the thought, but the fact the victim of the crime is not just the direct victim, but also all the members of the group, who are terrorized by the crime. And I think there’s some logic to that. That could even be true in the case of police, if the attack is truly intended to just go after a cop for being a cop. That said I suspect this will just be used to throw an even larger book against people for “resisting”.

I generally agree with you, but there is precedent for more serious charges based on your thoughts: intent.

Cops are really hated and persecuted in Louisiana

I even heard that, in some parishes, they cannot even get free meals

I wonder what the punishment would be for violence against a black, transgender female, Hindu, cop under this law?

Do they like pick one.... Or do you get double secret super whammy punishment?

Yes, if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that that cop-killers are treated with kid gloves. Also, attacks on cops are way down, so this is a solution in search of a problem.

Some people don’t attack cops because of their status, but because they don’t want to be arrested. This law could create nearly a strict liability standard because any attack on a cop would probably be prosecuted as a hate crime. Is “resisting arrest” a hate crime now?

Yea, it’s pretty ridiculous considering that they basically call out the cavalry and send you to jail without passing go for doing anything to cops as it is now.

I get the idea of wanting to stop the handful of “cops gets shot while sitting in his car eating donuts”, but let's be real.... They're locking those perps up for good anyway.

Like huge quantities of bills passed every year, this will stutter, stop and then be halted when even a conservative judge orders it suspended because Police Officers are not a protected class.

The only way this stays on the books is if a federal judge somewhere decides that Police Officers are a protected class.

Another “throw it against the wall to see what sticks” law. It means nothing and will be struck down by the first federal judge who even glances at the case.

Since my sarcasm meter went off I will assume you meant things WILL go wrong. You are wrong. This bill will function exactly as intended. Everything that will go ‘wrong’ is not a bug it is a feature of the system.

I feel like it’s already an aggravated offense in most states to attack a police officer/firefighter/paramedic in the course of his/her duties — like, in some states it takes you from second degree murder to first degree murder. Classifying it as a hate crime is just a stunt.
