Right? How many dead children will it take? What is the tipping point?

Joy Ursin, a neighbor, told WDSU that Moore, a divorced father with visitation every other weekend, is “devastated” and usually puts his guns away when his children are around.

You fucking, stupid, careless asshole. Usually? Usually?

This. “Usually” is one of those words that just doesn’t belong around guns, kids, or nuclear launch codes.

That made me see red. When dealing with guns the rule is “Are you actively planning to shoot something/someone or in the process of cleaning the weapon? No? Then the gun is in a secured, locked box and ammunition is in a different secured locked box”. It really is not that hard. If you own a gun then it should be out of its secure box or travel case only if you are going to use it or clean it; and as soon as you stop doing either of those things it goes into that secure container. Guns should never be out for any other reason or any other time. “Usually” puts it away, goddamn, but fuck that guy. I am heartbroken for the rest of the family who now have to live with having lost that little girl because this idiot knows nothing about gun safety.

Only thing I can think of is that it’s not even been 48 hours now. Hopefully this is just diligence and/or foot dragging and this asshole will end up in prison where he belongs.

Ugh. This is why you guys need mandatory courses like we have. One of the first things you learn is don’t leave the fucking thing lying around. Firearm and ammo are locked separately, and only out when they’re in use. It should be a no brainer. But nooooo. The pro gun lobby cares more about their boomsticks than the safety of kids.

Telling someone to do something and them actually doing it are two different things.

Anyway, having the gun and ammo locked up separately is contraindicated with cowboy fantasies. How can you heroically shoot the bad guy like that?

Fair point, our firearm culture (such as it is) is different in a lot of ways too. Also, snerk. You nailed it.

I don’t mean to make light of 27 deaths, but honestly I’m surprised the figure for active police killings is so low. Considering how often we hear about cops getting killed on the job, I’d have assumed it were higher. Meanwhile, we’ve just hit 12 transgendered Americans murdered this year (surely a conservative figure, since additional ones are likely to have gone unreported as involving trans victims). Clearly our society has a lot of problems going on, and we need to work on more strategic and preventative solutions beyond “what a tragedy, too bad we can’t prevent this sort of thing” and “kill the bad guys.”

Police officers killed in the line of duty get a hell of a lot more media coverage than a child being shot.

There’s a part of me that says, “GIT ‘EM!” and there’s another part of me that was that age when there was a gun in our household. My parents taught me how to shoot (“Unless you mean to kill someone, NO!”) and on that particular rifle, if I was ever in a panic (i.e. someone was attacking another family member) “Red means DEAD!”

I know that my situation was different—once I was told something super duper serious, it stuck (I still can’t strike matches at 41) but other than locking this guy up for negligence, what else is there? There are gun locks, combination safes, etc., but for every accidental shooting, there’s an unlocked liquor cabinet, medicine cabinet, box of matches, and (this happened recently), methadone in the refrigerator.

Do I have a solution? Hell, no—other than the obvious NOT LEAVING THE GUN WHERE SHE CAN GET IT.

Is it really worth the lives of so many children to be able to legally keep guns in your house just for kicks, though? This is not comparable to liquor, medicine, matches, or anything else. Guns are designed to kill. All the evidence shows that keeping a gun in your house does nothing to keep you safe, and introduces a not insignificant chance that you or one of your loved ones will get killed by it. No amount of teaching a kid gun safety can compensate for the fact that they are literally developmentally incapable of making judgments and controlling their impulses the way adults can. Why on earth would you possibly want a gun in your home? Because your parents had them in the house when you were a kid?

Prosecuting parents who leave their guns lying around where kids can use them to shoot themselves and others would be a good start. As someone above pointed out, we prosecute parents for accidentally killing their children by forgetting them in a hot car more often than not. If a kid drowns in an unfenced swimming pool, the owner is very likely to be sued or prosecuted for making their pool accessible to children. I think people whose negligence with their guns leads to the death of a child (or anyone else) need to face the same consequences as anyone else whose negligence leads to someone’s death.

While losing your child from your own fricking negligence is generally punishment enough... more should happen. At an absolute minimum, no unsupervised visitation.

This is criminal negligence for which he should be going to jail, it kinda just goes without saying that that’s the end of visitation to me. You put a loaded gun on the table with 3 small children there and leave the room, it’s not really much different than pulling the trigger yourself.

It is not nearly punishment enough.

(And that is completely ignoring the phrasing of your post which kind of implies that a child is an object to be used as punishment..)

    “usually puts his gun away.”

What the fuck dad?! These people are typical gun owners. No respect for the potential to end life. There is no logic in the world that will justify him forgetting to secure his gun because HE SHOULD BE DOING IT EVERY FUCKING TIME HE ISN’T USING IT, not just when his kids are around. I cannot fathom the stupidity it takes to leave a loaded gun out in the open. Jesus Christ.

Prosecute him. We prosecute people who forget their kids in the their cars but leaving a loaded weapon around 3 children is an honest mistake? Fuck Eric Moore. Fuck the NRA.

As a gun owner (and avid shooter) I can tell you that I have great respect for what a firearm can do. This guy made a number of tragic mistakes — from storage & security to not teaching his kids what to do if they find a gun, but he is NOT a typical gun owner.
