Think about all the pregnant women in the US. If they KNOW there are 157 I’m going to guess there are many more. And since it travels by mosquito and from partners, this number will continue to rise. Yikes. Rough time to be pregnant in the US. Well, when isn’t it?

I am newly preggo and have to go on a work trip from LA to NYC at the end of June. I’m really afraid but I can’t say no, and in my industry (as well as so many others), it’s not a good idea to tell people at the start of a project that you’re knocked up. So I guess I’m going to go, melt in long sleeves and douse myself with bug spray hourly.

If you’re really concerned, I recommend getting clothes that are specifically made to repel mosquitos or prevent them from biting you. It isn’t full proof obviously but they do make them lightweight for hot climates and it might give you some peace of mind.

Literally just left my midwife’s office and my question of the day was “WAH ZIKA” and she was totally chill about it and told me not to worry. Then I have to read this shit.

I am in south Texas and stressed the eff out over this. It’s going to be hot as ballz this summer so I think I’ll just bathe in DEET everyday to try to protect my offspring.

I think most of these cases are from people who traveled to the US from infected areas. You are allowed to lose your shit once they start reporting that people who haven’t traveled start getting it.

At least now that special breed of woman who obsesses over every possible risk the world poses to their soon-to-be-born snowflake will have something real to be anxious about.

I’d be a lot more sympathetic to a lady wringing her hands over this than over the amount of toxins and radiation they imagine are emanating from the overhead electrical wires.

There is no “right” way for a woman to be pregnant. She doesn’t worry enough, she worries too much, she doesn’t take the right precautions, she’s ridiculous, etc.

I doubt many women are looking for your sympathy. Just a head’s up.

Let them wring their hands over whatever they want, it doesn’t affect you. Being pregnant is extremely stressful for some women and there is a lot to be justifiably paranoid about.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 157 pregnant women in the United States and 122 in its territories (predominantly in Puerto Rico) had tested positive for the Zika Virus. Fewer than 12 of these women have had miscarriages or babies born with defects, according to Reuters.

I wish the original article gave more details, like how many healthy babies were born rather than just the number of miscarriages or defects. Twelve is still pushing 5% which is terrifying enough, but what if more than half of these 279 women aren’t far enough along to know about potential problems?

Seriously. They haven’t been tracking this for that long, some of those 157 women could be early in their first trimester. Saying fewer than 12 women is not at all informative. (I’m not saying it will be much worse, I just have issues with data that is so incomplete as to be misleading).

Question, because I haven’t bothered to read any of the actual documentation about Zika...if you contract Zika while not pregnant, does it impact you for life and potential future pregnancies? As someone of child-bearing age who is contemplating having another kid at some point, I’d like to know if I should be extra careful of mosquitoes or if I only need to freak out if I get pregnant in the near future (please god no because #1 is still a baby herself...)

From what I’ve read, if you are not pregnant and you get Zika, you’ll be fine and you become immune. If you know you have it, you should wait at least 8 weeks before trying to get pregnant, I think? Anyway.. long story short, if you get it now but don’t plan to have kids soon you’ll be fine.

However, I did hear on NPR they think it might be sexually transmitted, so if you did contract Zika and spread it to someone who then either got pregnant or impregnated someone, it could be a big deal for them.

“Earlier this week, the Senate approved a compromise bill that would put $1.1 billion of the $1.9 billion requested by the White House to combatting the virus.”

That’s fucking rich. The Republican controlled Senate decided to throw a bone to “combat” a virus that they themselves said was to “test” the faith of women but also that women shouldn’t have the right to abort based on the virus.

I literally wish the very worst on these Republican scum. Every. Fucking. One. Of. Them.

I’m newly pregnant and this freaks me out. Like there aren’t enough horrible things to worry about. AND abortion is getting harder and harder to obtain. So the future? Thousands of deformed babies being born and a)dying or b)being forced to live off the government because mom’s can’t get abortions or birth control. Hopefully they find a vaccine/cure soon. Though I do wonder, if hundreds of GOP moms and daughters get Zika will republicans change their mind on abortion?

    Holy. Shit.

And heckuva job, Congress, for underfunding this emerging crisis. Penny-wise, pound-foolish; ounce of prevention, pound of cure...These are clichés for a reason, you legislative dipshits.

Not all of Congress, specifically republicans in Congress. They want to throw a band aid on it, and think it will go away. Wait until it becomes endemic and finds species that will become vectors. At this point in time, I am not optimistic that we will be able to do anything to stop this.

I have been on the fence about having a baby and now we’re finally going for it. Today I realized what risk I’d be taking as a woman living in Texas with summer around the corner.
