fighting polish is David Schwimmer as Rob Kardashian SrBobby Finger

    Listen, I’m not defending Larry.

    But.

There are a number of white people who have dismissed rap and hip hop as like, an entire genre. And those same white people are falling over themselves to praise Hamilton. And it does make you raise an eyebrow.

Same here. I know several white people who have this sentiment. They are the same one’s who say they don’t like rap but like some Macklemore and Iggy songs. These people definitely exist.

Bold words, considering they’re from a man who has never cast a person of color in a non-token role in his entire career.

I feel like this just super isn’t true. Are we calling Wanda Sykes and Charlie Murphy’s roles on Arrested Development Token? Outside of Larry, his wife, his friend/agent and that guy’s wife I can’t even think of any other recurring characters on the show.

I’m not a frequent viewer so I could be wrong, but I’ve seen at least 20 episodes. I’m all here to criticise him for a lack of diversity. (Seinfield alone is enough to condemn him). But lets not lose credibility playing fast and loose with the facts.

Most White People Just Say They Like It To Sound Hip

Weird, this is kind of the same sentiment I had about white people loving Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

There are so many reasons I dislike Larry David and he just keeps adding to the list. To me, Curb Your Enthusiasm was a show about a guy I would endeavor to spend as little time as possible around because he’s a raging asshole.

It’s not even about the rap. Plenty of the songs aren’t even rap or hip-hop. Sometimes they shift partway through, like “Satisfied” - Angelica only raps when she’s expressing her inner thoughts directly to the audience.

By saying that, he’s ignoring that Miranda has a brilliant grasp of a musical’s structure; leitmotifs and themes are consistently and brilliantly worked into different numbers. It could be a polka sung in pig latin to the accordion and he’d still have that structure. Sondheim writes equally dense and complex lyrics, and no one thinks white people can’t get those.

Anyone else want to see this because they are fans of the other American Revolution musical, 1776? That one is my favorite and I think Hamilton would be a great bookend for it.

(shrug) I grew up in East Coast Virginia. You couldn’t throw a stone without hitting a Historical Colonial landmark. It’s in my blood.

      I LOVE 1776.

There’s a line in Hamilton from Hamilton to Adams: “Sit down John, YOU FAT MOTHERFUCKER” that is a direct reference to 1776. Miranda knows his shit. :)

(Also young Feeny is in the movie and the OBC which is just glorious)

I have been saying of Hamilton “It’s like 1776 and Jesus Christ Superstar had a baby.” (JCS is my favorite and I’m also a Daughter of the American Revolution so you can see why it’s caught me)

I feel so awkward by how much I love Hamilton, because I only saw it a few months ago, and had stolidly refused any contact with it before. I thought it sounded dumb! I wasn’t going to be one of those white people whose enthusiasm for the show felt largely performative! I was better than that, damn it!

...But all that meant was I went into the theater “raw,” not having heard a single bar of the score, or seen a single performance clip. And it hit me ten times harder than it would have if I’d been at all prepared.

THIS IS WHY IM TRYING SO FRIGGIN HARD NOT TO LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK.

I let myself listen to the first 5 songs...and that shit has me in tears, not because it’s sad, but it’s just so...inspiring and empowering?

I really hope i win the hamilton lottery one day...

I suspect the reason Larry’s getting attacked her is because many of readers here fall into that category. The same as how many white girls love Beyonce, but haven’t listed to another contemporary R&B artist since the 90s.

Fuck this guy. I’m a white girl and my favorite musical is Once on This Island, which tells the story of a (black) peasant girl that defies class boundaries to fall in love with a (light skinned) rich boy. Great music is great music, regardless of race.

Wow. I was actually in a production of Once on This Island way back in, like, ‘97 or so, and yours is probably the first mention I’ve heard of that show since then. We were a group of all middle-class white kids, which, hearing you describe it now and thinking back on the show — probably not great. But heck, I was like 15, so I wasn’t really thinking about that.

Once on This Island is the only musical I’ve ever seen on Broadway! I heard about it on NPR (lol) and when then FIL offered to take me and then husband to a Broadway show I insisted on that one. Glad I did. It was enchanting.

Dude, don’t be That Douchey Guy.

Most people in general haven’t seen it, given that it’s currently only playing in New York and it’s next to impossible to get tickets to.

The cast recording has been available for months. The musical is structured so that the majority of the plot takes place in song/rap, so it’s easy to get the entire story simply by listening to the soundtrack. It’s not a spectacle of a production like Les Mis or Wicked that relies in part on costume/sets to set the mood; the vocal performances drive the show. So yes, a person can be delighted/moved by it without actually seeing it.
