    A friend of mine told me recently that his uncle told him that he would be explaining “the truth” of homosexuality to his young 4 year old son (truth being that it is an evil and terrible choice that sinful people make) but would be sure to do it in a way that “honors” my friend because, you know, they’re family and all.

    Brief useful bit of additional information, this is WELs. They’re the extreme right of Lutheranism (i.e., I grew up thinking Missouri Synod, the “normal” right, were liberal). They also have issues with women being in any sort of authority over men. This is hearsay, but after I left I learned there was an ongoing argument over whether women teachers should be removed, as they might instruct little 6 year old men. Authority.

    Short version, there is so much hate in that church that they consider love, that I’m more worried for the mental health of the trans or gay kid that is enrolled, rather than whether they may stay enrolled.

      I grew up ELCA, the liberal-est of the Lutherans, but in Wisconsin and holy shit the WELS are assholes. The only WELS church service I went to (niece being baptized) was right after Anna Nicole Smith died. The pastor brought her up and “look where her lifestyle got her.” It was so mean and unnecessary. I’ve never been able to be around them since.

    So, basically, any gay or trans child who enrolls will be watched like a hawk and be written up for any and every tiny infraction that the school can think of until the child either leaves or is expelled for some nonsense reason.

      Worse than that, it will be any kid that exhibits gay “tendencies,” which probably means anyone slightly gender nonconforming.

    It looks like it’s a Wisconsin Synod Lutheran church, which I believe is the same ultra-conservative branch of the Lutheran church Michelle Bachman belongs too. Obviously these folks aren’t Lake Wobegon material...

      I regret I have but one star to give. I’ve been saying this over and over lately. Particularly to people who say they might vote third-party, indepedent, or write-in based on their “principles”.

      You might hate BOTH candidates in the general election for different and valid reasons but I can almost guarantee anyone will have a preference about the next (several) SCOTUS appointees just based on where they stand on all the socially regressive legislative fuckery these hick-states can’t seem to pass quickly enough all of a sudden. And now that Trump has released a list of what looks like a GOP wet-dream-team of asshole future justices, the stakes are firmly set.

      One of two people WILL be President and they will have their way with the SCOTUS. I hope anybody considering a “principled” alternative vote in the general election realizes and accepts that (unless they happen to live somewhere their vote won’t change the outcome).
