    Why would anybody donate money to Chris Christie at this point? If you’re that rich, there are myriad charities - even dubious causes - that could better use that money. The mind reels.

      He’s still the governor. A donation to him gets you in line for contracts or greases the wheels with someone else further down the line. Say you need a favor from the mayor of Toms River, who is resisting your entreaties. A donation to ol’ tubolard Christie gets the favor through.
