    So, like was there ever a period of time, from the fall of the USSR where Russia had even a glimmer of hope of not being a totalitarian cesspool and maybe succeeding at being a nominally respectable developed nation? Or was the end of the the Soviet Union a lot of flash and no substance, with things pretty much continuing on the same as always?

      Gorbachev. The problem was when the USSR collapsed from its own internal contradictions, so did the economy. You need a period of stable and general prosperity to become a nominally respectable developed nation, and Russia has never really had that. Instead, the opportunistic predators and parasites flood in and, voila, Putin: meet the new FSB boss, same as the old KGB boss.

      Gorbachav was about the most honest leader the USSR ever had, he wasn’t afraid to admit that they were broke and that the system was falling apart. I think that’s the main problem, is that the Russian people always fall for these dreams that Russia is great and they’re doing everything right and all that, but then they’re constantly being led by charlatans who rob the treasury of everything they possibly can.

      Yeah, sadly this can be viewed as an improvement in Russia. I mean the bar was set at toe level to begin with but this at least raises it to toenail level.

    A part of me just would not give the slightest fuck if Russia reverted back to 70's-80's Soviet mode. Because these people really, truly, do not seem to learn or want to change. They were offered a different leadership (albeit a mostly drunk one) and decided to reject it for this. Stalin-lite again with some more brainwashing and hard hand-holding.

    So cheers to you, Russia: May you continue to fall down the same hole over and over. I’d say put down the vodka but that’s all you have left.

      It’s unfair to overlook the vast number of Russians who oppose that manbaby. If the nut jobs in the US or wherever you live manage to out-vote you, you’re screwed enough without having the entire international community assume you voted for the dick who won.

        This is the guy who probably carried out an actual false flag terrorist attack to increase his own control and popularity. And changed the law so that he can serve for an indefinite number of terms now.
