    Naomi said when she was growing up her mother wouldn’t let her eat grits ... because it was poor people’s food.

    Her mother sounds like a bitch.

    She might be right, though. I was poor as hell growing up and some of my favorite foods were grits and grilled cheese. Ooooh and buttered bread sprinkled with cinnamon. You don’t need to be poor to like that one, though.

    I love hearing stories of ridiculous rules families have about not doing “poor people” things. They tend to be offensive but I like that shit seeing the light of day, it also helps me figure out weird regional behaviors. Ridicule the behavior and go try some grits.

      A lot of those families with “poor people” rules were one or two paychecks away from poor and hanging onto the lasts shreds of “respectability” they had by distancing themselves as not to be judged by others. My family certainly was. Us kids were always clean, hair done, spotless clothing in public.

      Nowadays, I see an opposing trend: children of the wealthy look like straight-up ragamuffins, snarly hair and crazy, ragged clothes (Euro boutique brands, tho, natch), running feral. It’s the prerogative of the upper class to give so few fucks that they DARE the world to judge little Talullah and Ibsen.

      I was in school and a group of friends were deciding where to go one night and some friend of a friend didn’t want to take the train with us because poor people take public transportation.

      I miss public transportation.
