Perhaps you could explain something to me? Do dudes mean #allmen or is there a specific subset of men who fall under the dude category?

Well first of all, by dudes I don't mean The Dude. He is forever good in my book. But in reference to this article, it is the dudes who automatically view a show as lesser because it has many women. In general, I view that subset as just douchey guys.

I once had a conversation with a guy who was incredibly angry and offended that I liked the show, Girls. He went on and on about how awful it was, how puerile, how infantile, how idiotic these girls were, how selfish, and what bad acting the show produced. He couldn’t figure out why anyone would ever watch that show. After he had exhausted himself on his invective, I said casually, “So you’ve seen the show?”

    “Every episode,” he replied.

It tickles me when huge fans of all those overlong Judd Apatow movies about manbabies or even Seinfeld fans absolutely LOATHE Girls...when those characters are just as unlikable and predominantly white (ding ding it’s sexism)

I’m a WOC and I get teased for liking Girls by many different groups of people (and hated on for it by white dudes) which is annoying...Lena Dunham can be a bit aggravating but the show’s pretty good. Have you read that Anne Helen Peterson article about Marnie’s character? It’s amazing.

Oooh, no I haven’t. Thank you!

I think Lena Dunham does an excellent job of portraying these essentially unsympathetic characters in a way that you understand why they are who they are. I’m often irritated at them, but in a very maternal way. I’m also old enough to not feel defensive about what they’re doing, but young enough to remember what being in my twenties was like, and some of it was kind of like that.

This is because women won’t date “nice guys.” The only reason you can’t get a date, and women seem to act like you are creepy, is that you are a nice guy. Women always treat nice guys poorly. Get angry the next time a girl doesn’t act thrilled by your massively entitled, slightly stalkerish attention and call her a cunt. That'll show her you are a real man.

It was back in college while speaking to the type of guy I’ve distanced myself from ever since, that I first came to understand that what a “chick flick” really was to the kind of people who use the phrase in earnest is just a regular movie was a female protagonist, that’s it.

It was explained to me that Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, though both coming-of-age tearjerkers, were not chick flicks because they starred dudes. A League of Their Own, arguably the greatest baseball movie ever made, however, was most definitely a chick flick. Even romcoms were more tolerable when the told from the male POV, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall or 500 Days of Summer. I pity that I’ll never get to ask where Zero Dark Thirty would qualify.

I could tell talking to this guy just how itchy he got at the prospect of seeing the world through the eyes of a woman. Even a fictional one. Even for the length of a two-hour film.

I’ve dealt with similar people asking why as a guy I would ever considering a playing a game with a female protagonist (or choose a female protagonist when there is an option). They never seem to understand that putting oneself into another prospective is actually a GOOD thing. :/

Some of my favorite films are chick flicks. Alien. Aliens. Resident Evil. Terminators 1 and 2. Contact. The Descent. Mad Max. The Force Awakens. Such great chick flicks.

The obvious solution is for all us bitches to start down-voting the piss-poor movies that don’t pass the Bechdel test(yes, all those ones you didn’t rate but watched on HBO because whatever you’re paying for it anyway, might as well or because your s/o wanted to watch it or your brother or whatever who cares). Let’s start with everything Chuck Norris has been in and move on from there. TO IMDB, SJWs! 👊🏼

Sure, but let’s be honest though, Sex and the City was pretty terrible. It offended me much more as a New Yorker than as a man.

I had a guy friend who LOVED Sex and the City, with the explanation. “It’s a story about attractive women who like to fuck. Why WOULDN’T I like that show?” So, it's all about perspective.

      Sure, I mean—it’s a terribly subjective assessment...one I wouldn’t necessarily agree with.

I actually saw a good bit of the show—I had a girlfriend in college with whom I had an arrangement that I would sit through Sex and the City and Grey’s Anatomy with her if she would not ask me questions or to explain what was happening during LOST—so my opinion is at least informed.

And if it makes it any better, I also hated Sex and the City: ManBro Edition a/k/a Entourage.

I think it’s stupid that DudeBros downvote women-centered TV shows and movies, but does anyone really go to IMDB to look at the user generated ratings? I go there when I’m trying to figure out who the day player on the episode of Law & Order from 1994 is.

I mean, Shawshank is a decent movie, but top-rated film of all time on IMDB? Really?!?

yes top 250 list is ridiculous, but it is a good site to find new shows/movies. For me it has helped me find a lot international shows/movies, many of which are then turned into U.S. movies/shows (eg bron/broen (the bridge), Forbrydelsen (the killing), The secret in their eyes, Utopia etc.)

I do think the bias that the more masculine scripted TV is the more quality it has is in both women and men.

Even when women love shows like Sex and the City it’s often considered a guilty pleasure.

I think SATC and Entourage were both dreck, but Entourage never received even a fraction of the scorn and hatred directed at SATC.

And I personally disliked SATC but it wasn’t even 1/10 the level of dreck Entourage was.

The ultimate example to me is Golden Girls. It’s one of the best sitcoms of all time. If it weren’t female focused it would get more credit for that.

I was reading some of the reviews for the movie Brooklyn on some website and multiple men rated it 1 star and wrote reviews like, “chick flick...not for men.”

Why bother rating it? I know multiple men who enjoyed the film so why bother giving it one star and writing such a inept review stating it’s a chick flick. Absolutely nothing about the characters, plot line, writing, acting in the movie, just didn't like it because it's a chick flick.
