I recited the pledge of allegiance hundreds, possibly thousands of times as a child but holy hell as an adult I find it creepy as fuck and people who are really gung ho about it are even creepier.

The pledge of allegiance is super weird. It’s the textbook definition of nationalism over patriotism.

Those assembled on Monday debated Gordon’s motion, the Post reports.

Wow, they debated it. Not dismissed it outright, or acknowledged the motion, voted quickly to dismiss it, then moved out. Debated it. Wow.

Yeah. You know how they always say that they have to grow their party beyond white-male Christians? They don’t really mean that. If they did, this asshat would have been told to leave and never come back.

I'm not even going to give any credence to these asshats but possibly all motions have to debated? But it seems we both don't know.

“Islam does not have any basis or any foundation,” the pastor, Trebor Gordon, said. “It is the total opposite of our foundation.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHHAHHAHHAHHAH!

(Why is it the Tea Party guys who claim to be “experts on the Constitution” know the least about how it works, and the pastors who claim to be “experts on The Bible” know so little about it?)

It really is remarkable that someone who claims to be a scholar of a religion, an expert on his own would know so little about the most common religion in the world, especially one that is very closely connected to his own religion.

Not saying he should necessarily have a huge amount of knowledge but he should at least have a basic understanding of Islam and how it connects to his own beliefs.

To be fair, Judaism is also antithetical to Christianity in that the basis of Judaism is the one true God and the basis of Christianity is the divinity of Christ.

Yeah a lot of commenters must not have actually watched the video. This sentiment wasn’t really received well and I was impressed by the man who stood up and argued against it and he got the most applause. I found this kind of encouraging. I watched expecting this guy to get a lot more traction but the opposite happened: people straight up rejected it. Republicans, in Texas!

      Not really.

The Koran is a rule book like the Old Testament, which is not a huge part of the Christian denomination belief, as the vast majority (if not all) of the masses are about Jesus and readings from the New Testament.

“It doesn’t bother me at all”

I believe that. You’d have to suspend self-awareness and your dignity to be a part of a party whose presumptive presidential nominee is proposing a Muslim travel ban.

But, I’m sure you’re “one of the good ones” and that’s all that matters, I’m sure. You got your’s - however tenuous it is whatever the hell you got - so fuck everyone else, right?

During my prayer, this man did not bow his head

I once had a preacher stop his entire service to make me bow my head during his prayer. Protestants automatically drop their heads when someone leads them in prayer. They don’t understand that not everyone does this. This dude on the pulpit got into a pissing match with me because I didn’t bow my head, which gets me to the other thing that annoys me about this chaplain’s quote, calling it “my” prayer. That reveals an arrogance unbefitting of a worship leader. It’s not your prayer or my prayer. It’s prayer. Who is saying it is immaterial. If you are so focused on what other people are doing during “your” prayer, you are not doing it right.

That’s funny. I thought the whole point of Protestantism was that everyone can worship god in their own way - free from religious structure and dogma. (Hell - the evangelical flavors don’t even have any qualifications to become a “pastor.” You just “proclaim” yourself one and get to preachin’.)

Well, not quite. The whole point of Protestantism was more of a reaction against the dogmas of the Catholic church, but to be honest, that is part of what I admire about Catholic prayer. You don’t have someone up there freelancing with bullshit like, “Dear Lord, we just thank you for this day, and ask you to help us do (X).” You say prayers that have been around for centuries, “Ave Maria gratia plena Dominus tecum...” The Mass is the same whether it’s said in Latin, English, Spanish, or Chinese.

As you say, many Protestant churches don’t really discriminate about who is on the altar. If you’re moved by the spirit, you can get up and testify. And the sermon is the show. People will leave churches if they don’t like the minister’s sermons, because that’s pretty much all there is to the service.

I’m so proud of my hometown. I wouldn’t bow my head in prayer for this guy, nor do I participate in my daily pledge of allegiance routine and I’m not Islamic. So what he means to say is, “Christianity and those who do not practice Christianity and say the pledge like I do, don’t mix.”

I love you Texas, but you’re driving me away. Moving to Colorado next month!

What the fuck is up with the guy asking if Islam is a religion? Yes, fuckwit, it is. I’m sure this is some nincompoopery thought up by right wing fundy assholes, but I’m evidently not current on their various flavors of horseshit. Can anyone enlighten me as to the purported point being made here?

They’re fond of arguing that Islam is a political system rather than a religion, therefore the First Amendment’s guarantee of the right of free exercise of religion doesn’t apply to Muslims, so it shouldn’t be legal for them to build mosques, preach publicly, etc.

Wow. That’s stupid. They should be careful about asserting that religions cease being religions when they seek political ends, lest they lose their tax exemptions.
