“I firmly believe life begins at conception and anything we can do to protect human life I’m all for,” she added.

Good for you. And your job has nothing to do with your beliefs but representing your constituency half of whom are female.

I believe that astrology makes some sense. Were I elected to higher office, I would not be mandating civic duties to individuals based on the position of Saturn at birth.*

(*Especially not Virgos. OMG: such slackers. Unbelievable.)

This is the most fucked up shit and I live in Texas. As someone who had to do an at-home abortion after my 2nd rape because I couldn’t afford even the cheapest one offered here years ago, these laws will lead to more women like myself who are poor doing their abortions in back alleys or bleeding for days like I did to the point I had to just sit on the toilet nonstop.

And fuck, I wasn’t anywhere close to 19 weeks.

aww thanks. It was the most horrid experience ever. I had another child then (from my rapist ex) and had to move her baby crib with toys, diapers, and bottle supplies so I could just wait until everything was over.
people who pass these bills act like having an abortion is the easiest decision ever made and fuck that noise. it wasn’t for me and despite knowing what I did was right, I still feel bad at times for doing it.

19 weeks is almost 5 months. This ban is not absurd if you compare it with the rest of the world. It’s actually quite progressive when compared to our favorite progressives, Europe. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/....

    http://abortion-clinics.eu/abortion-europ...

If you believe women have the right to abort on demand, then it is absurd. But you also lose allies, and votes. The caveat is that liberal constituencies will interpret abortion laws liberally, while conservatives interpret conservatively.

The issue is all these states make you jump through hoops to get an abortion early and gestational age is a crap shoot because it is based on the woman’s last period. I’m not even counting pregnancies that are frankly not viable due to medical reasons. You want to end abortion-BIRTH CONTROL (IUDs, vasectomy, long term being ideal)

It’s absurd because there’s no meaningful number of women seeking abortions that late in the pregnancy without some sort of extenuating circumstance (typically fetal abnormality or medical issues for the mother). We know because countries with no time limit restrictions on abortion (like Canada, for instance) have basically the same number of late-term abortions as places *with* such restrictions.

If legislators could point to a high or growing number of elective late-term procedures as evidence that the time restriction was needed to curb them, that’d be one thing. But they can’t, because it doesn’t exist. All it serves to do is garner them votes from their base, help chip away at abortion rights, and hurt women in the process.

The people of South Carolina should demand that the legislators pay for the attorneys our of their own damn pocket.

    Because this is unconstitutional.

I actually agree with blaze06. They can get people out for the Presidential election but state legislatures and local government they’re way behind the curve compared to the GOP. As for the solution...it’s complicated since the Dems seem to be more diverse.

It’s nothing, but a test case. Anyone know how conservative the 4th circuit courts are? They could be gambling on a 4-4 split at the SC affirming the ruling of a conservative lower court.

Good thought, but I doubt the appeals process would make it to SCOTUS before the vacancy is filled, thereby ruling out a 4-4 split. One can only hope that Garland 1) gets confirmed and 2) is pro-choice.

They are definitely gambling on the SCOTUS nominee being picked out by Trump’s handlers.

So this is the new game with the anti-women’s rights crowd? They are going to incrementally one up each other on slowly eroding the right to choose.

“Oh, they have a 20 week ban? Well, we’re going 19! Hah!”

“I firmly believe life begins at conception and anything we can do to protect human life I’m all for,” she added.”

26 percent of the living children in your state live below the $24,000 per year family income federal poverty level (last updated n the 60's or so. C’mon Barack. Fix this.) Another 24 percent live below the $48,000 per year low family income level. That is half of the children actually currently alive by all definitions in your state live at or below the low income level, and your focus is non-existent children?

Well, then. Go to make believe fire lake place.

Feature. Not a bug. I don’t know why we’re not more vocal about it. Just like everything else women’s lives and bodies are collateral damage here. They just want more poor uneducated people to believe the lie that Republicans are for ‘smaller government’ while passing laws that favor corporations over actual people. More stupid people to work for less and less. Praise be to the plutocracy.

They need a rider on this bill that any force-birthed child with profound, lifelong disabilities/serious illness MUST be adopted by one of the idiots who wrote/voted for this atrocity.

I think forcing them to pay medical bills for the duration of the mother’s pregnancy and child support to the loving and willing birth parents or adoptive parents would be better. Also, the child’s lifelong medical bills and adult support, if the child is not able to support themselves comfortably. If they want to be the ones to make the choice to bring someone into the world with profound disabilities, they need to be doing everything in their power to make that person’s life is as safe, enriched and comfortable as possible.

It would be better if they just didn’t force people to have babies, disabled or not.
