    It is worth noting that the Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen who get stationed there are pretty much always confined to base and unable to leave because, Cuba. So I don't know why it is so surprising that they have access to the exact same entertainment that every other base has (there are always tons of teams, especially softball) and that they have heavy participation because there isn't a lot else for Service Members to do. I feel like I am missing out on some kind of joke, but the Armed Service Personal at Gitmo are assigned there just like they would be anywhere else. It's not something most people chose. Also every base has these kinds of newsletters, magazines, and pamphlets. I guess "It's funny because Gitmo."

      The joke is the juxtaposition of seriousness of the situation at Gitmo with the whimsical team names. It’s not that it’s surprising that they have recreational activities, or even that anything is surprising.

      Ahh, I remember my days playing softball at a prison camp! Well, we didn’t CALL it a prison camp, we called it a refugee camp, but it was a prison, what with the wire and the guards. We would drink and play, and when our ball would land in the wire watch our refugees barter for cigarettes and liquor with us to get it back. Good times.
