I know the purpose of the article is to tsk tsk the south, which ok we should. But other states up north encourage segregation as well, with the whole charter school private school business. It’s something that is happening all over the country.

Right? I’m soooo tired of the “wtf the South is so backwards” crap. Last I checked, racists live pretty much everywhere, not just here.

I am guessing that they weren’t technically not allowing student of other races to enroll, they were just being strict about where you lived and the neighborhoods themselves are not integrated at all.

I’m guessing they are using geography and boundaries to do it. Most of the white people live here. Most of the black people live here. Defacto segregation. Grrr....

This is a bit misleading. Cleveland High IS racially integrated, about 60/40. East side is 99%black. The real segregation is along income lines.

I interned at Eastside’s middle school, lived in Cleveland for 6 years. The problem runs much deeper than just an integrated high school.

How do the two schools compare scholastically? The picture at the top of this article would suggest that East Side High is a pretty good school. I guess I am just trying to make sense of how intentional school segregation could still be happening? Is it a case of neighborhood zoning, or the students of East Side maybe don’t want to go to Cleveland High? Honestly just curious. It seems like the comments are just assuming East Side High is an inferior school, which is weird...

Is this like that town in the movie The Village? Are they aware that the rest of the US has electricity and flush toilets and that women have the vote now?

You may be on to something. Instead of scaring them with the threat of mysterious, murderous monsters outside the village, they’re held in place with the terrifying threat of... Black children.

What possible argument could they bring forward (besides the racist one)? I am genuinely curious what they think would be an effective argument in an appeal? “Because reasons” will not hold up in court.

Cost and burden of forcing students to attend a more distant school would be my guess.

Cleveland, OH is the worst city I have ever set foot in (and I've been to Detroit more times than I can count) & apparently Cleveland, MS is probably worse. We should just remove all cities named Cleveland from the country.

The delay in desegregation has deprived generations of students of the constitutionally guaranteed right of an integrated education.

...and also has perpetuated the racism even further by teaching these children that this is ok. disgusting.

public school funding should be handled on a state level and not a school zone level. this will not stop parents from fundraising or donating to their local schools. it will simply give other children a fucking foot to stand on.

Southerners may seem pretty stupid about a lot of things, but they’re pretty fucking crafty when it comes to school zoning. Living in a town in the Deep South, it just never made any sense to me how they split up the districts. Until I took a close look at the neighborhoods they were ensuring entrance into the “better” schools that were still further away than the “not-so-good (minority) one down the street.

Kind of, they had to explain the attempts to integrate the schools and the attempts to keep them segregated. The courts have been on this case since the 60's. It also had to explain three separate plans to eliminate the unconstitutional segregation, and explain why only one of those plans will work. Also, one school is 50/50 while the other is all black, so the main issue was funding and maintenance.
