      I try to tell this to my students all the time while still being sensitive to the fact that for them, high school IS their whole world. I pretty much forgot about high school about two months into college, lol.

      Try asking how 6th grade was. Still, every experience is local both in distance and time. No one ever truly thanks their lucky stars they did not live through the European plague, even when told that 1/3 to 1/2 of everyone alive then died, horribly.

    Not that this isn’t bad but if you go to private school they can dictate how you dress, how you style or dye your hair, how much makeup you can wear, what types of shoes you’re allowed to wear on denim days, etc.

    I went to an all girl catholic school and all of us (including parents) had to sign school conduct and dress code forms for everything (including prom). I wanted to take a female friend to prom but couldn’t because tickets for couples (much cheaper than buying solo tickets for both of us) could only be sold to female/male pairings. It didn’t matter if we were just going as friends.

      Part of the issue is that the rules were changed at the last-minute.

      The original dress code did not specify that girls had to wear dresses. However, at the 11th-hour, the school sent out an email saying that girls could only come to the prom if they were wearing a dress.

      It’s not a leap of logic that officials at the high school heard Aniya was wearing a suit to prom and hastily acted to ensure that didn’t happen.

      They can dictate what you wear. It doesn’t mean they should, at least with cases like this. Set all the rules you want on hemlines and midriffs - but making a rule like this, that was clearly targeted at this particular girl, just days before the prom is unforgivable.

      I went to this highschool about 10 years ago and in years 2004-2006 we had ladies wear suits or tuxes and several of those young women were gay, some were just tomboys.

      So I have NO fucking idea why they suddenly decided to be assholes. Literally the SAME administration who let my bestie wear a suit... didn’t let this girl wear a suit. It makes NO sense.

      Like this doesn’t sound like the school I went to 10 years ago. It doesn’t sound like the school that let me debate religion with my teachers, or stocked our bookshelves with banned books and even Wiccan books. I read Mein Kampf in that school because I wanted to know what it was about and our librarian said no book was off limits. It sounds like a place I don’t know or like. Next letter I get from begging for a check is going right in the bin though. You sure af not gonna any alumni dollars from me.

        There’s this whole “paradox of tolerance” thing going onhere so I can’t say you’re right, But I definitely can’t say you’re wrong. These are just bitter fucked up people changing the rules at the last second to spite a child. Who the fuck does that?
