This happens a lot. There are several celebrities I took special note of because they were almost exactly my age ... come to find, a few years down the road, they had become younger than me. As far as I’m concerned, they can have at it. Considering the LFD (last fuckable day) bar for women is set at 25/26.

Semi-related: you know you’re getting old when you hear on NPR that it’s Dennis Rodman’s birthday today and he’s FIFTY MOTHERFUCKING FIVE years old. 55!

One of my friends is a celebrity who lies about her age. I know for a fact that we’re the same age yet somehow all sources (IMDB, wikipedia) show that she’s 4 years younger than me. I really wonder how common this is. No, I will not tell you who she is.

I think lying about one’s age went out of fashion for a few years and now it’s back, baby!

Related: A friend of mine went to college with Laverne Cox. Said friend is 43. Cox’s age is listed on various sites as THIRTY-ONE.

Of course it goes without saying that Laverne was not Laverne at that time. She has pics of pre-Laverne Laverne (they did theatre together) and pics are AMAZING.

Ha. Whoever thinks that Laverne Cox is 31 has a vision problem. The same with whoever thinks that Margot Robbie is 25.

In a way, I appreciate all the age-fudging, because it’s more proof that it shouldn’t fucking matter how old you are as long as you can play a role. If you’re a studio head who would cast Margot Robbie in a role when you think she’s 25, but NOT when you think she’s 30, then you are part of the problem.

Some of my family grew up in Hollywood and they were pretty damaged by the whole eternal lying about age thing. My dad can’t believe I’m older than what he tells people is his age. At least he admits to being my father. But then, his mother - my grandmother, who had been an ingenue type in the 1930s-40s - told everyone I was her niece for as long as she lived (which was an eternal 49, even at 88).

    That’s showbiz.

My older sister (who is 17 years older than I am) said she was 30, like, forEVER. And then I turned 30, and she continued to say she was 30. When I was 35, I asked her "doesn't that get boring for you?" and she said "Not as long as I can get away it!" She finally admitted to 40 when I turned 50, 3 years ago...it doesn't just happen in Hollywood!

My great grandmother never got a drivers license because she didn’t want any documentation of her real age. She wasn’t old Hollywood but she was East Coast aristocracy and had married a man younger than her. While this was always suspected, I wasn’t able to confirm it until I pulled some census records from when she was a child.

I can see the logic in actresses doing this if they don’t hit their big break until they’re already in their 30s. They have to know that they’ll be dealing with a pretty short window to make their money. Didn’t Jessica Chastain try something similar a couple of years ago, only to be contradicted by a yearbook photo?

No, Chastain is one of the few actresses who’s always been pretty whatev about stating her age. Girl don’t care. In Jolene she was 29/30 playing a teenager and was ridiculously good. I think if you’re actually looking for juicy roles and not playing on your youth, you don’t have to lie about your age. Also, for a pasty ginger she is DEFYING the law of aging. And I speak as a pasty ginger who is six years younger and not :-(

Funny, when I read about her being 25 my initial reaction wasn’t “but she doesn’t look it” it was “GODDAMNIT SHE’S DONE SO MUCH MORE THAN ME IN THE SAME SPAN OF TIIIIME”

I do not want her to be my peer. I want her to be my GOALZ.
