Put it in a Love Song is great, but I wish I liked Alicia Keys more than I do. She’s an amazing vocalist, but I find a lot of her music to be pretty “meh.” She has a new single out, In Common, though, that I’ve been digging.

“If you could love somebody like me, you must be messed up, too.”

She has amazing skills, but either lacks the lived experience or can’t bring life into her songs :-( I really want to love her work but cannot connect with the music.

Like this song, I don’t believe that she believes that she woke up in someone’s bed and that she is messed up.

Yeah, I think that’s definitely a part of it. Which is maybe why I like the song I reference above? I mean, it would be hard to sing that if you didn’t connect with it.

She is like the alternate universe Taylor Swift—-all the damn talent but just cannot put out another song as good as "Fallin'."

Maaaan I am NOT a Taylor Swift fan but I’m sadly going to defend her here. I certainly think Alicia is a more talented instrumentalist, but Swift has pretty solid chops. And on the flip side I don’t think there was that much of a gulf between their commercial success until recently. All of Alicia’s projects have gone platinum afaik and she also sells big overseas . And they’re also both extremely critically successful, I think they’ve each won 5+ Grammys.

Alicia appeals to more of the adult contemporary crowd than straight pop so the ceiling isn’t quite as high but she’s definitely one of the top artists in R&B/adult contemporary since she dropped, just like Taylor is on the more lucrative pop side. I think they’re much more similar than opposite if you disregard that they work in different genres.

It’s crazy because I hate fallin and didn’t give her a chance for so long because of that song. My ex loved her though and took me to see her in concert like ten years ago and I fell in love. She has put out so much good music in my opinion. That last album wasn’t my cup of tea but the three albums that she put out after her first were awesome to me.

I'mma HUGEEEE Alicia Keys fan. I do understand where the thoughts behind the comments below are coming from. But in NO WAY should she be compared to Swift. I don't get it lol. Alicia has a variety of talents across, music, business, charities and acting. Tbh, what doesnt help is that she takes alot of time away from the lime light so when she comes back it feels like you have to get to know her all over again. But not me though, I thoroughly connect with her music. If you listen carefully to the lyrics and the messages she sings about, beyond the sound, her music is deeply relateable!!

I can’t stand Taylor Swift, but I don’t think anyone has ever complained that the problem with her corporate pop is that no one can relate to it.
