“I can’t deal with that. I guess I’m not ready.”

She made a pretty apt summary of conservatism and its reaction to human progress.

Though to be fair to her, she’s at least exhibiting a self-awareness that is sorely lacking on the right.

its kinda pathetic because Im sure there are millions of Republicons that just cant deal with a hispanic(?) woman speaking english and being on the streets of this country. they just cant handle it either, but Im sure this lady would get upset if the same thing happened to her on the train.

Personally I find transgender a bit strange but I really don't feel the need to lash out at them in anyway. They aren't hurting anybody, it doesn't have any effect on me or my life (or anybody elses for that matter) so why can't we just leave them the hell alone. If living as a different gender than you were born as (anatomically speaking) makes you happy that's cool with me. I just don't get why people feel the need to berate somebody for something that has no effect on their life. Don't like what somebody else does to make themselves feel happy? Fine move on leave them alone as long as they aren't harming anybody else.

    I guess I’m not ready.

You’re right. You’re not ready for society.

Where is this woman from? Was she born yesterday? Did she not grow up in NYC where you literally see just about any and every type of person? It’s such a weird thing for her to say. You see all kinds of stuff on the NYC subway but a transwoman was too much? lol

    GIF

BTW, why the hell isn’t hasn’t she been arrested? Or did I miss that part of the story?

But the surprising thing about NYC is how insular some parts of some boroughs can be. There are people who rarely leave a few-block radius. They just don’t need or want to.

She was literally riding on the subway. This was not her first time on a subway. This was not her first time seeing someone “weird” on the subway, trust me.

In the words of Clint Eastwood (which were spoken to a small-part actor hamming it up for a little bit of extra attention in one of his movies):

“Look, I cannot begin to express how little this is about you.”

So when is she gonna be charged with assault? This goes beyond what she said. She assaulted another person, and she needs to answer for that.

If Pearl Love doesn’t want to file charges, and it seems like she never went to the police, it’s highly unlikely that any charges will be filed.

But I’m all for the public/internet shaming that will follow.

I once stepped in between a person who was being physically and verbally violent towards another person in public. It’s a good thing to do, but a dangerous thing to do. In my case, it put me in danger and didn’t help the person being assaulted. I was not physically strong enough to protect her. I’m not going to blame anyone for not putting themselves in danger.

framed, absurdly, as Eldridge’s opportunity to share “her side”

Don’t ever change, TV news. For all that people are blaming the Internet for the GOP’s buffoon nominee, it’s the insistence of TV news that every controversy has two equally valid sides that’s led the country here.

Sorry, but you’re grasping at straws on this one.

There was an attacker and a victim. It is, by definition, a conflict with “two sides”. That doesn’t mean that the individuals involved have equally valid points of view, but “TV news” is not creating or enforcing some artificial duality here.

Also, telling a shitty person that this is her chance to “share YOUR side of the story” is probably the best way to get her to talk. The producers likely view it as an opportunity to let a bigoted shithead hang herself on camera, but framing it that way isn’t going to get her talking.

Keep in mind this is PIX 11. They have this odd...I guess you could call it ‘northeastern conservative’ bent that isn’t really that regressive but more like....a middle aged dad from Queens sort of vibe to it.

“I meant what I said. That person offended me in a way,” Eldridge said of Love. “That person was, to me, explicit. To me, too much. To me, I couldn’t stand it. To me, this is not fair to me.”

I, I, I, me, me, me. The modern cult of self-obsession and self-regard in a nutshell. Everything is about how ‘I’ feel, how it relates to ‘me,’ what ‘I’ think about it, the impact on ‘me.’

Guess what? Everyone’s just trying to live their lives and what you want or feel is no more important than anyone else’s desires or emotions. Just get on with your day and mind your own fucking business. And, if you can find it in your flinty heart to show a bit of compassion, you might be surprised at how it makes you ‘feel.’

Seriously. Did she not notice that no one else apparently gave a fuck, or not enough of a fuck to go on a ranting spree? And her kid. Sometimes kids pick up bigoted traits from their parents. But I’m hoping hers has realized how crazy her mom is and go the other way.

As the son of two breathtakingly bigoted parents, I rejected their views at a relatively early age, so it’s certainly possible for a child to throw off that kind of thinking.

The longer term effect is more subtle, however, because those horrible voices of hatred are still there in my head. They’re tiny and far away, but still there.

I like to think they don’t affect my attitudes and behavior on a day to day basis, but deep down I know they probably do, if only by virtue of the fact that I go out of my way to be “tolerant” and “solicitous” and all the rest of the “white man’s burden” crap, instead of just reacting to situations naturally. It’s like I’m on constant guard against some aspect of myself I don’t trust.

TL;DR: It’s possible to break free of a bigoted upbringing, but not without baggage.

I am consistently baffled by people who try to claim that someone else existing in a manner they don’t approve of is somehow “unfair” to them. What do they think “fair” means? Who gave them the expectation that in a just world, everything and everyone conforms to their preferences?

What will be unfair is if this woman doesn’t get convicted of assault and a hate crime.

I guess some people missed the memo that they’re sharing the planet with 7 billion other people, all trying to just get through the god damned day. The concept of sharing as a whole must be extremely foreign to her.

If you want to go out in public, you have to get over yourself. Things will be offensive, people will be rude, children will be annoying. It’s part of sharing this world with other people. Don’t like it? Stay home and don’t leave.
