Is literally anyone surprised by this? Thiel’s been a rightist nutjob for years now. He was a Ron Paul supporter who calls himself a conservative libertarian, exactly the kind of asshole who’d support Donald Trump, the “outsider” who’s been wishy-washy on libertarian issues enough to endear himself to certain types of Paulistas.

He’s also got super weird views on women and poor people (from Wiki):

Peter Thiel wrote, on April 13, 2009, in the Libertarian ‘Cato Unbound’ blog, “Most importantly, I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.” In the same article, he also wrote, “Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women — two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians — have rendered the notion of “capitalist democracy” into an oxymoron.”

What the fuck does that even mean, if anything, beyond typical “rabble rabble poor people rabble rabble women...”?

No, it doesn’t. However, I’m worried about the recent polls in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, all of which show Clinton and Trump statistically tied.

How the hell do you beat this guy?

My wife and I have six gay friends (3 male couples). All fucking 6 of them are Republicans. Fortunately, they have enough patience and good humor to put up with my “that’s like being a Jewish Nazi” jokes.

Or they’re smart enough to not vote on a single social issue that will work its self out over time? Their view of the economy maybe be more important than what they do in private?

Yeah but the fact that they apparently can’t see that there are some real parallels between their support of Republicans and Jewish Nazis, is pretty sad.

Thiel’s a bright guy, but like a lot of bright people, he not only has no perspective on other people’s lives, but no conception that they in fact may have different life experiences altogether.

As for failing and succeeding, he’s a perfect Republican insofar as he’s privatized the gains, socialized the losses, and taken credit for the whole thing.

I’m not sure why we would expect an expert in one field to be an expert in an unrelated field. It’s more often the case that people with a very concentrated skill set have broad deficits in other areas of knowledge or life experience.

Sometimes I wonder if we shouldn’t let the rich libertarians go live on their island utopia. The country might be better off without them. Plus I’m pretty sure that place will go Rapture within a decade.

Yeah, you’re right — America would be better off without all those industrious, hard-working, creative, productive, people who don’t want to be taxed an exorbitant rate. Fuck those people.

GOP says “We have no shortage of self hating supporters and Thiel is welcome into our traditions. Our impeccable track record with Hispanics like Cruz or Rubio speaks for itself. Also, Bobby Jindal would like a word”.

And 23% of women have a favorable view of Donald Trump, so the conclusion to draw is either strange things happen, or some people are dumb as hell.

On one hand it’s very disappointing to see Thiel supporting Trump.

OTOH he had a big hand in developing something that lets me keep close tabs on the lives of my ex-girlfriends. So I’m going to give him a pass on this.

Surprise! A conservative libertarian billionaire supports the post-ideological candidate for president.

I do fear Trump will appeal to those that are happy to oversimplify the federal government’s role - because people who seek to “disrupt” often forget there’s not an easy solution to providing basic needs for a citizenry.

But it’s still a bummer to see a very public figure in a very influential, exciting portion of the economy siding with a bigot

Really? A bummer? I’m sort of surprised at you Sam. I would have expected the tone of this article to be much more cynical with respect to what your expectations were regarding Thiel before this declaration.

One thing that is interesting here is the math Thiel is probably doing behind his support for Trump.

One the one hand, Trump probably does represent the simplest path to a lower tax burden. On the other hand, Trump’s ideas about trade & immigration, really run hard against Thiel’s interests.

For example, the cynical part of me thinks that Trump’s stance on immigration is the only reason that Zuckerberg has been so publicly opposed to him.
