Wouldn’t it be nice if tax breaks went to companies that donated money to causes like this rather than threatening to up and leave in favor of cheap labor? Oh how I wish money didn’t run the world...

I live near a little known national park that is basically a swamp. I don’t know what the Congaree National Park would be sponsored by.

P.S Guys, you should visit. It is East Coast virgin forest which is incredibly rare. We’re talking 1000 year old trees in this park.

Never heard of this one, looking at pictures right now and it’s beautiful! I’d love to visit it someday, old growth forests are so magical (although preferably not in the summer as I’m assuming mosquitos there get pretty wretched #swampproblems)

Same. I love our state and national parks - having them devoid of logos/branding/advertising (besides like a couple vending machines in the office) is part of what makes them a haven from the world.

There was a time when our tax dollars helped fund National Parks. They’ve raised entrance fees and cut the staffing down to the minimum, I really hope we shift back to federally funding our national treasures instead of selling them out to corporations.

God bless you for these, Bobby. You’re a true patriot.

But seriously. This scares me. The DOI does have cooperators that fund some of its projects and infrastructures, but they’re mostly other public agencies that tend to not have a sense of corporate ownership and entitlement. I worry about the consequences of what essentially amounts to a private industry takeover of the NPS.

One consequence could follow from the new earmarking rule. Rather than relying on scientific studies and professional rangers to identify at-risk species or habitats, corporations will guide the focus. That focus will almost undoubtedly be in the “frontcountry” — trailheads and visitor centers that see the most people (customers). It’s a warped version of environmentalism.

Bingo. That’s one of the likely consequences that terrifies me most as a federal environmental scientist.

The national park budget is $2.9 billion. A single B2 bomber is $2.4 billion. There you go, Congress. Just buy 1 less killing machine, and you can almost double the national park budget.

Because allowing our greatest national treasure a line item on the national budget has become so politicized that it’s impossible to actually give them the money they need, even though we would literally never notice the difference in any real way, except in how awesome and well kept our parks would be.
