The East river is not a river. It’s a tidal strait of the Atlantic Ocean that runs between New York harbor and Long Island sound. Salt water all the way. But it’s apparently good fishing for bluefish and stripers, as the anglers are out at all hours around my place.

It, like most NY waterways, has been cleaned up a lot in the past few decades, but the currents as the tides reverse can be fierce and treacherous. Don’t jump in the East River, even if the cops are chasing you. You’ll be sorry.

George Carlin always used to say he got his immune system strong by swimming in raw sewage there every day. Today we have DEP sludge haulers that haul that stuff way, way offshore.

This has been your East River “The More You Know” moment.

Okay, thank you. I once asked my husband’s family, who are from NYC, why it was called a river, and they really, really did not like that.

It’s purely an honorary title, mostly because the Hudson (an actual river) is on the other side of Manhattan, and we like our easy equivalencies.

Trivia: the blowing-up of the Hell Gate, clearing the free flow of water between the harbor and the sound, was one of the largest civil engineering projects of the 1800's in the U.S., and has often been described as “the largest planned explosion before testing began for the atomic bomb.”

Jeez, that ‘s sad. I have the feeling that conspiracy theorists (not that the man was one) would be greatly disappointed if they actually got inside the UN building... They would expect to find secret meetings everywhere and would probably find people preparing powerpoints while drinking coffee instead!

Haha I can confirm this. I’ve worked for the UN – both in house and as an external contractor – and it really mostly is a lot of people working very normal office jobs.

While you guy are making jokes, this was my cousin. NO we don’t have no word on if he is okay. NO this isn’t funny and NO we don’t know what is going on with him. He’s 26, his bday is this Thursday and we just want him home. For the ass that said he’s dead. I’m sorry you know this how. Until they find a body, we’re going to hold on. STOP being fucking idiots

I seem to remember mention of the East river being something like that at some point, yeah.

I hope that they either find him or he got away with a great story. No one thinking straight would jump in to that river. It’s deadly.

          He dead.

Even if the River itself wasn’t dangerous, it’s not warm enough for people to survive in water right now.

Given the police’s track record with mentally unstable individuals he really made the right choice.
