Another reason women are better at these essays: we fucking write one every time we send a work email, only to get a one-liner back or just an “ok.” So many manfeels to navigate!

      Hi Dan—

Here I establish the reason for the e-mail, and remind him where we left our project.

Here is a paragraph with my findings and any interesting/unexpected items I came across which my be helpful.

Now I state my ideas for going forward and, anticipating backlash to each one, make a case while pointing out all potential flaws.

Now I ask him what he came across doing his portion and propose that we sit down for 15 min when he has a chance.

Thanks for your input—please let me know if you have any questions.

      —Angelica

“Beta Male” as a name for his blog is fucking terrible beyond belief awful.

I’ve got a confessional essay moment, though. I’ve been upset about Genius’s headline font (specifically the letter “U”) ever since clicking on Leah’s post. And the more I think about it, the angrier I get.

That letter “U” is too wide and making it angular was a bad idea. It looks like an LI put together. Also, the Ks and the Rs are weird and unpleasant.

/that said, on topic, yes, confessional essays are a minefield for men because they run the danger of hitting critical clueless privilege levels like the ‘I never realized women were discriminated against until I had a daughter’ genre.

I liked the point about there being better confessional writing by women because of the shit-and-sticks resources of women’s publications. I had never thought of that, but it makes total sense.

I’m so glad I’m not alone on that font thing. I thought this said POP-LIP when I saw the original piece. Even looking at it now, knowing it says Pop-UP, it still looks like Lip to me.

    Don’t worry ladies:

By the way, the site is geared toward men but, curiously, it will also feature the writing of women sometimes.

    Curiously.

Curious indeed! What could women possibly have to say that would be of interest to men?

      How to cook I guess?

I’m pretty sure the one of the two dedicated Adequate Man writers is a woman which is both amusing and awesome. No, oddly enough, “curious.”

And if I remember correctly, he was a married man when he wrote it. So many implications there.

if it dropped all the incessant backslapping, quit performing maleness .. In short, if it grew a pair.

What could Beta Male possibly say about male insecurity around issues of sex and relationships that Chris Gethard didn’t cover in two minutes?

He makes me feel so relaxed! I should watch this every time I’m worried that all men are turning into MRAs ready to take what little progress we’ve made away from us.

This seems like an appropriate place to leave this. I read Jezebel and gawker like a diabetic takes insulin, which is to say compulsively, multiple times a day. I even find myself reading through the comments sections once I’ve read all the articles because I want more. I like this place a lot.

BUT. I’m bummed almost every day because there isn’t anything technical or scientific or STEMmy being offered, and that a lot of the content being offered is “I” driven. Why? Is it because the gawker overlords have deemed the womansphere to be the domain of the vegan youtube drama and when Grace Coddington got her first kiss? Or because the audience doesn’t click on articles that break down big scientific and engineering concepts in any real way? If it’s the second one, then I’ll see myself out. But I imagine there are plenty of other women (and men!) Reading this site who would value the Jezebel perspective on more technical shiz. And I know you’re starting a “we’ll answer your science questions!” topic but the comments quickly went the way of “why can’t we have more permanent pretty hair dyes” and GMO fears so I don’t have high hopes :(

I don’t know the answers.. I just know that the STEM fields, for all their progress are still broken, and that I spend my days in mostly male spaces, talking about mostly “male” concepts and crave a community of ladies that will take on the massive questions we need to solve in the next few decades to make it out alive. And if I can’t find them here, then where?

I guess Jez doesnt want to muscle in on Gizmodo/ io9 turf. You should have a look at the science articles on The Toast, they are always great. I really enjoy @scienceUpulie on twitter and her rocur account Real Scientists, you’ll find many great scientists and enthusiasts on twitter and you could find your own community of science loving women there, maybe.

OK, well, my dick is my dick...you can like it or not, it doesn’t change anything. I’m (at the age of 50) personally tired of being responsible for every goddamn thing that happens to my wife and kids by virtue of the fact that I’m “DA MAN!!!1!”. Frankly, I’d like to kill myself and let them get along on their own, being as how I’m the root of every problem ever.
